There no pretense of subtlety or tongue-in-cheek cutesiness in the comments in the self-described rant, simply the bare knuckle conclusions from about five decades of observing the machinations of politicians, preachers, and profiteers. The truth is its own defense. --Jerome T Gandy

Paula Curry: Why is it wrong for bootleggers, right for county?

Paula Curry Pyles writes:
Seems funny to me that for years and years, the bootleggers have done what you all are wanting to make legal. If it was wrong for them to sell it, then why all of a sudden is it ok to make it legal? When money is involved, even the worst sins are all of a sudden ok! Long as the county can make money from it! Our world is in a bad way, when we measure success of a county, by whether or not liquor sales are legal! --Paula Curry Pyles

Letter: Police have their cups full

Brenda Henson writes:
Granny Nannie you are right they will get it, but we don't have to have it so easy for people to get, and also why bring preachers in on this matter, maybe. Preachers will pray harder for lost people and put in an extra dollar for lost people. I pray it don't pass and ask that every one else feels the same. Our police officers have their cups full with drugs and alcoholics. --Brenda Henson

Supt. Alan W. Reed asks for public guidance as schools progress

'Our school district will forever be a work in progress,' Supt. Reed says. He adds that the school administration has many ideas for where to take the district next, and, he adds, 'Our board members and I feel that without community input we cannot achieve the continuous improvement model we all desire.'
Click on headline for complete letter

Dear CM readers,

Our school district continues to improve in a multitude of ways. Some of the improvements are highly visible while others are not. We are proud of our strong academic gains, addition of over 30 career pathways, construction of the satellite campus through the area technology center, partnerships with area colleges and universities to allow ACHS students to take college courses thus saving parents thousands of dollars, major re-build of our technology infrastructure, zero high school dropouts, free breakfast and lunch for all students, mini-clinics in each school through a forged partnership with Cumberland Valley Medical, winning sports programs and band, and the highly visible campus-wide improvements to our buildings and grounds. This is only a partial list.

Sue T. Buley scolds 'Jerome T. Gandy'

Sue Buley writes:
'Jerome T.Gandy' may be correct in bootleggers or other businesses in adjoining counties worried about losing dollars to legal alcohol sales. However, I highly doubt that "the preachers, who apparently are terrified the collection plate might be a dollar lighter or that they might lose an infinitesimal amount of control over the flock should alcohol become legally available" is the case. It is also highly offensive to the Christian community who value their churches and pastors. While you may have meant this to be a factual, yet tongue-in-cheek comment, it actually made you look small and belittling. - Sue Buley

History from Mike Watson: Adair County's Glenwood Seminary

This installment of History from Mike Watson is one on the Glenwood Seminary. It introduces many Adair Countians to some little know facts about Adair County including the origin of town name 'Bliss,' that there was once a 'Glasgow Road', and that the community once had a good physician, and that, even then, before the establishment of "Rural Route 2," there were 'simple mail communications' for the village.
