Ralph Waggener: Grandson's books cost $200 at Silver Creek

Guest commentary re: Renewal of Superintendent Alan Reed's contract

By Ralph Roy Waggener
Editor/Publisher, Just for a Smile News

My oldest daughter,Sharon Waggener Green. is visiting and we have talked about school costs. Steven Green her son and my Grandson is attending Silver Creek High School in Sellersburg, Indiana and she told me that they spent around $200.00 for books for Steven. Andrew her oldest son. who is going to Purdue University now. had to pay for his books when attending Silver Creek High School, as well.

So it seems that students most everywhere pay for books and a lot just don’t use text books anymore.

If you do anything to make a school system better someone will be mad.

If someone gives you a million dollars it would make you mad because you should have been given 2 million dollars.

The more a leader does the more people fuss. The more a leader does the more that is expected of him, and the more people can find wrong about him; just sit on your rear hump and do nothing and the public will have nothing to complain about, because you have done nothing for to complain about!

The Adair County Marching Band's drum line is not quite front but certainly center in this picture taken by Libby during this afternoon's BOA Regional at Austin Peay University in beautiful Clarksville TN. They are performing again this evening. I am not knowledgable concerning scoring, so someone else will need to address that issue. - BILLY JOE FUDGE

Click on headline for complete commentary

By Harry Loy

Intelligent, hardworking, visionary, honest master communicator--These are the traits I would look for if I were hiring a school superintendent.

Those are also the traits I would use in describing Alan Reed.

Under Mr. Reed's extraordinary leadership, students in Adair County are now attending modern and well equipped facilities.

Kathy Phelps Gaskin: Mr. Henson makes good point

Kathy Gaskin writes
Bill Henson makes a very good point in that there are always two sides to every story. The folks that were against renewing Mr. Reed's contract have the opportunity to tell us their reasoning. In fact, the tax payers deserve to know!

I have to wonder if this decision has anything to do with the situation with the ag dept. that occurred.

My thoughts are there is no room for politics in our school system! Period! - Kathy Gaskin

Joyce Coomer: Education without cosmetics

A story of her father's excellent education, achieved in austere settings.

By Joyce Coomer
Personal commentary

Ninety-seven years ago, at age fourteen, my father dropped out of high school because he could get a driver's license and go to work. I have his high school report cards and most of his grades were A's. I consider my father to be one of the most intelligent and highly-educated people I've ever known. He read widely, on everyday and esoteric topics, and was knowledgeable in many areas.

George Kolbenschlag: Where are elected officials on school leadership?

Comments re article 77783 Says Alan Reed has brought real change to Adair County

George Kolbenschlag writes:
I know I've already had my say, but the on-going commentary, all of it worthwhile, causes me to ask where are our community's elected leadership, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Columbia/Adair County Economic Development Authority on this issue? They should speak up, certainly, in light of the Mr. Reed's contribution to economic development. It reminds me of the old quip credited to a general entering a skirmish with his troops: "There go my soldiers, I am their leader, I must follow them." - George Kolbenschlag
Well stated, George Kolbenschlag As always, your comments are eagerly awaited. Agree with you, community leaders should weigh in now. We're also waiting to hear from teachers, principals, students and former students. From all sides. And, while we're against demonizing the three board members who voted against renewing the progress, and if it is not already apparent, I believe the failure to renew the contract will be looked back on by historians as another time when Adair County almost kept climbing to the top of the pinnacle, but sputtered out before making it. - EW

Jamie Isabelle: Shocked by vote on Superintendent contract

Personal commentary

Jamie Isabelle writes:
I will admit, I am shocked about the vote for Superintendent. I personally have addressed a few issues with him over things this year already and past year. I was very pleased with his response in a very timely manner. I also was pleased with one of my issues being address and taken care of. My question would be since apparently he "pissed" some people off . . . wonder who they have in mind to replace him. I'm quite sure there is an underlying cause of this decision. - Jamie Isabelle

Debbie Nobles: Wants list of educational accomplishments

Comments about: Comments re photo 62152 Adair Co School Board Stunning rejection of spectacular progress
Note: A very valid question: CM will be posting academic accomplishments, which match - maybe exceed - the aesthetic accomplishments and the unprecedented financial achievements in the three years of the current school superintendent's tenure. _EW

By Debbie Nobles
Personal commentary

My children have graduated, but I do have a grandchild in the school system. There is no denying Mr. Reed has made the school grounds look pretty, but my concern is with the education of the children.

I would like to see a listing of Mr. Reed's educational accomplishments, not just the aesthetic ones.

Bill Henson: Two sides to every story

By Bill Henson
Personal commentary

I feel we need to hear both sides before we trash the 3 board members who voted no. After all there is always two sides to every story. We have had many good leaders in our school system over the years it's always been done in the name of democracy of which we can be proud although everyone is not Always happy with the outcome it's still the best form of government in the world and it does work. So as I've said many times vote every election and let it work. After all the sun will still come up tomorrow. - Bill Henson
