What a great feeling to rescue an animal from certain death

She recalls a search for baby calf, missing 11 hours in neighbor's cornfield
Comments re article 75852, Update Scooter found a bit disoriented but alive

By Victoria Pike

It was so heartwarming to read of another animal lover who didn't want to give up on their baby. Congratulations to the Barnes family on finding their precious pet.

I have looked for hours trying to find missing pets and a few baby calves over the years and most of the time it doesn't turn out well.

Peggy Fudge: Glad to see June Dairy Day return to what it was

Peggy Fudge writes:
I am so glad to see June Dairy Day return to what it was in my childhood. Back in the dark ages (the 1960's), there wasn't much to do, so a day spent on the square watching and joining the fun was an event we greatly anticipated. For us kids, the highlight was the raffling off of a calf. Every year we were sure we were going to win. No such luck, but it never ruined the fun. I hope a crowd turns out, with lots of children to discover what a good time can be had with nary a smart phone in sight. Many thanks to the people who are making this event happen! - Peggy Fudge

Lorne Holler: Some intersection drivers in a hurry to meet Jesus

Lorne Holler writes:
I was sitting at the red light, the light changed green on my side and a semi blew through the red light like it wasn't even there. Two days later was behind a pickup that actually stopped for the green light. I suggest putting a red light camera up and then send the red light runner an actual ticket in the mail. The camera would take pictures of the vehicle and their tag number. I have noticed its a behavioral issue, because all the precautions are there and are working. Folks are just in a hurry I guess to meet Jesus. --Lorne

Secretary Grimes warns businesses of unofficial solicitation

Secretary of States says mailings are misleading, not official

By Lynn Sowards Zellen
News the Kentucky Secretary of State's Communication Office

Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentucky's chief business officer, is warning businesses about a misleading "Notice of Potential Compliance Violation" from an entity identified as "Business Compliance Division." The mailing appears to be an official government document, but it is not.

Several businesses have reported receiving the postcard, which directs the recipient to call 1-855-530-2615 to avoid potential fees and penalties. The card bears a symbol with a scale and two hands shaking.

Wonders why it's taking six weeks for culvert project

Comments re photo 60840 Stream Straightening Project Culvert arrived in pieces

Maury Lewis writes:
Please explain why it takes 6 weeks to dig a ditch put drain pipe in and replace the road with all the heavy equipment that is available in this day and age. I know that I am not the only one wondering WHY. - Maury Lewis
Maury - as always, thanks for your questions. The answer to this one is above my pay grade. My complaint is that they didn't builder a Coddger Stadium for old guys to watch the show, no longer how long it takes. It sure beats television for theater. Maybe someone else could answer your question. - EW

No lion. No tigers. But BEARS. Oh my

Concerned about about accidental human encounters with bears

Peggy Fudge writes:
I am concerned about the number of reported (purported?) bear sightings in our part of the state. There is the possibility of human or domestic animal injury because on an accidental encounter. Also, I can envision a person or persons (possibly fueled by ETOH) going on bear hunt, with bad consequences for all involved. What does KDFW say about these sightings? Do they have any idea of how many bears are actually roaming into more populated areas, or why? - Peggy Fudge
Thanks. Peggy Fudge. Good questions. The answers are beyond my knowledge, but most likely we will be hearing much more from Kentucky Fish & Wildlife on the subject. - EW

Peggy Fudge: Intersection needs more than double lights

Wants rumble strips, automatic ticket video surveillance and hefty fines for those who run red lights, as older model black SUV did recently when writer was approaching light
Comments in support of: Comments re article 75851 Joyce Reliford: Double lights aren't enough

By Peggy Fudge
I agree with Joyce - Double lights aren't enough. I was stopped at the light, coming back to town from WM. The light turned green, and I watched before proceeding through the intersection.

Thank God, I don't rush the light. An older model, black SUV breezed through.

The light didn't turn red on him when he passed through the intersection. It was red in time for him to stop, but he didn't.

Letter: Agrees with Joyce

Vicki Brock Miller writes:
I agree with Joyce. Those new stoplights are no improvement. I can't imagine what the excuse could be for the state not putting rumble strips down at all the bypass intersections. Joyce Reliford: Double lights aren't enough

Driver cites near miss as evidence that new traffic signal not sufficient to make intersection of Burkesville Road and the Veterans' Bypass safe. Thinks rumble strips are needed.

By Joyce Reliford
Personal Commentary

It is evident that the double lights at the Highway 61 intersection are not working!!! As of Wednesday this week a car was going through the intersection and another one ran the light and just missed the car in the intersection by mere inches!!!! Just a few seconds difference would have possibly been another fatal accident.

I don't know the answer, but I don't understand why they won't put down warning strips.

It is terrible that people are not paying attention after all the accidents that have already been there. The news coverage has been great, drivers are just not listening or reading. --Joyce Reliford

The needed loot a haiku villanelle for the birthday of Chambers Stevens

Those who want to soar

Those who take the floor

Those who find their core

Tom Chaney: Custer Wore an Arrow Shirt

Of Writers And Their Books: Custer Wore an Arrow Shirt. Tom comments on a comic extravaganza about four environmental warriors who are united by dismay at the destruction of the west. This column first appeared 13 June 2010.
The next earlier Tom Chaney column: The Battered Innocence in Us

By Tom Chaney

Custer Wore an Arrow Shirt

When I have enough of oil company executives who spew crude oil from deep beneath the Gulf and wish they could get their lives back instead of having to explain why their action is destroying life with the largest man-made environmental disaster in the history of the known world; then I retreat to the work of Edward Abbey, and long for a latter-day Monkey Wrench Gang.

Abbey's 1975 novel, The Monkey Wrench Gang is a "comic extravaganza" of eco terrorism. Four environmental warriors take aim at the worst invaders of the pristine desert of Utah and Arizona.
