Ben Arnold: Favors removal of big commercial light poles

Advocates exterior facade lights to add to the night atmosphere

By Ben Arnold
Personal commentary

I like it! Removing the big commercial light poles would also offer softer light and a warmer environment. We debated this back when we installed these decorative lights.

Also, if building owners added exterior, facade lights this would add greatly to the night atmosphere on the Square. If using the new LED lights, the cost of operation would also be low. Your cost estimate for operation of current lights make this a worthy investigation. Thanks for bring it up.

Deflate-gate: A simple matter of Boyle's Law

By Dr. Ben Arnold

The great fanfare over the under inflated footballs in the past New England Patriots football game can be explained by physics. The Ideal Gas Law (Boyles Law) gives the relationship among gas pressure, volume, and temperature.
P x V/ T = constant
Lets assume the Patriots' footballs were only inflated to 12.5 psi (the NFL range is 12.5 to 13.5 psi). The News report stated under inflated by 2 psi, we don't know if this was under inflated from 13 or 12.5 psi, lets assume 13, so that the balls had a reported psi of 11 psi as measured by a gauge. If the inside temperature when the balls were prepared was say 75 degrees F and the outside at game time was 50 F, we have a 25 F degree change. One little, big issue with the above equation is that temperature and pressure must be expressed in absolute units i.e. we have to translate the temps into the Kelvin scale and the baseline atmospheric pressure to the gauge pressure. We have to make some more assumptions:

KY Afield: Hunters post 2nd-highest deer harvest on record

After two seasons of record harvests, Kentucky's deer hunters kept the pace up this past season

By Kevin Kelly
KY Afield Outdoors; Kentucky Fish & Wildlife

The 2014-15 season closed on Jan. 19 with 138,892 deer checked; the second highest total on record and third consecutive season with a harvest exceeding 130,000 deer.

"I'm happy," said Gabe Jenkins, deer and elk program coordinator with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "There are a lot of deer on the landscape, and we're seeing an uptick in license sales. We're providing hunting opportunity and our hunters are able to be successful. As an agency, that's what we want to do."

A record 144,409 deer were taken during the 2013-14 season when a spotty acorn crop put deer on the move.
