Letter: Dinner with Governor Ford

Comments re article 72703 Judge Stephens orders flags to half staff remembers Sen Ford

By: Kathy Phelps Gaskin

Very well said Judge Stephens!

I too, have many personal and fond memories of Senator Ford being at our house on many occasions.

One of the most notable ones was when he came by for supper after several previous visits. He had told me I could call him Wendell, but I never had.....yet!

I was dressed in my Sunday best with lots of frills and lace that was itching me to no end. The doorbell rang and I was hoping it was a friend wanting to play and rescue me from this miserable dress. I excitedly ran to answer the door expecting Lee Ann Dohoney, Lisa Smith, or Tommy Corbin. It was Governor Ford. I said "Oh hi Wendell, come on in." I got a stern look from Mama that I really didn't understand.

Letter: Memories of Wendell Ford

Roger D Smith DMD writes:
Ed: The first time I met Sen. Ford it didn't take long for him to ask where I was from and did I know Grover Gilpin. I admitted I did, and he started with some phrases that only two old friends could share. His only request was that I tell Grover exactly what he said and to say hello. When I got home I did as he asked and to my suprise Grover repeated almost the same phrases back to me in referring to the Senator. I met him several times over the years and it amazed me that he remembered my name, but he never failed to ask about Grover. A very special friendship. --Roger D Smith DMD

New Downtown Louisville Bridge to Open ahead of Schedule

More extensive improvements will extend life of Kennedy Bridge

By Kerri Richardson, Terry Sebastian

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Motorists will be driving on Louisville's new Downtown bridge within a year - at least three months ahead of schedule, Gov. Steve Beshear announced today.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is accelerating construction of the bridge, part of the Downtown Crossing of the Ohio River Bridges Project, to allow for more extensive improvements that will extend the life of the 51-year-old John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge.

"Just over a year and a half ago, we gathered at this spot to break ground on the Downtown Crossing," Gov. Beshear said. "Since then, we've watched the towers rise out of the river and the much-needed Downtown bridge begin to take shape. Today's announcement means progress will be coming at an even faster pace."

Under the accelerated schedule, the Downtown bridge is expected to open in January 2016. At that time, it will carry both northbound and southbound I-65 traffic.

Canada geese in flight a reminder of Christmas dinners, her dad

Carol Salato Myers writes:
What a wonderful picture, Pen! When I first saw it, I thought it was a print by a famous wildlife artist. Every time I see Canada Geese, I think of my dad who loved to hunt geese. We ate a goose as part of our Christmas dinner for many, many years. Of course, wild rice and brown gravy were served with it. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful picture and allowing me to reminisce. - Carol Salato Myers

Bountiful snow on Allen's Schoolhouse Road, Putman Co., KY

Demand for hot coffee & pancakes & sausage is up this morning, too

Vicky Stanley, who has seen blizzard blasts like this where her bunch grew up in Canada (east of Pikeville, KY), reports that two inches of snow was cleared off her windshield this morning, so she could be on time this morning at OKCC.

She met the Commonwealth of Kentucky salt trucks on KY 1729, but said that the snow is fluffy, wet and melts quickly under her tires, so travel into Columbia this morning was easy, and 4WD was not necessary.

Her report is from the Allen's Schoolhouse Road, in the Putman County area of Adair County, KY.
