Vicky Pike finds $2.11 gas in Elizabethtown, KY

Victoria Pike writes:
Several places in Elizabethtown were at $2.11 per gallon on the main drag near the mall as we came through last night. We might see under $2 soon at this rate. I predict before the end of the year.

Just wonder why that area is cheaper than anywhere else that I have heard reported? - Victoria Pike
Vicky, thanks: Good news.Maybe one day it will get down to what it was in the Gas Wars on Dixie Highway. While we were paying War Prices of 32-32 cents a gallon in Columbia, with only about 19 outlets in a mile of the courthouse, we could sometimes regular gas for 16-17 cents on Dixie Highway. That's what we need now; a gas war like those of the late 1950s. - EW

Earthquake! Charles Marshburn moving tractors from barn

Waiting for the big one in Greater Gadberry

By Charles Marshburn

I received a notice in the mail this morning that my earthquake coverage premium is going up. I am assuming global warming is involved but I can't put my finger on how it could be responsible. I'm moving my tractors out of the barn into an open field and waiting for the big one to happen.

C/AC Economic Development Report, for 16 Dec 2014

Reason for optimism in last EDA meeting of year:
  • EDA votes to share expense to fix fence at Green River Industrial Park
  • Authority hears optimistic report from Ambassador Holly Grimsley and plans for helping local industry who outlines plans for building the economy
  • Chairman recalls heady years in late 80s when Toyota came to Kentucky, the C/AC Industrial Board had prospects and no infrastructure - and went into shutdown mode. It's different this time, chairman said, if community can pull it all together.
  • Authority votes to buy new laptop/printer, for EDA and Ambassador's use
  • Mike Curry, EDA treasurer, reports 15 Dec 2014 balance of $97,140.32 in treasury
  • CACEDA votes to hold all day Planning Workshop Tue 20 Jan 2015 in Campbellsville, KY, at United Citizens Bank, 294 Campbellsville Bypass, Campbellsville, KY

Chairman Dan Antle urged action this morning, Tue 16 Dec 2014, on some issues facing the authority to be ready for opportunities this year, and, in a one hour meeting, the EDA voted to fix a line fence problem at the Green River Commerce Park, invest in a badly needed laptop computer and printer, and set up a Planning/Work Shop, at the United Citizens Bank in Campbellsville where the EDA can focus on goals, opportunities, and any obstacle to landing new jobs for the local economy. In each instance, the recommended action was approved unanimously after due diligence deliberation.

Comment: CM Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Parade coverage

For context, see: CM story/album on Campbellsville for Vietnam Veterans Parade

Donald Skaggs writes:
I was very disappointed when I saw the picture on your website of the parade. You chose to highlight elected officials who, to my knowledge, are not veterans. The day was set aside to honor Vietnam veterans who were not given a welcome when they returned from serving their country. There were over a hundred Vietnam veterans in the parade. It would have been so much better if you had pictured several of these veterans instead of elected officials. From a disappointed Vietnam veteran and a daily reader of your magazine. -Donald Skaggs
Donald Skaggs: Appreciate the comment. For the parade, we posted material as we received it, the first being the welcome home banner. Yes, we'd like to have more veterans photos beyond the great one of the Color Guard, but did post it prominently on the front page the day of the parade. The photo of the officials was the last, not the first we received. It was a way to thank the folks, especially Rep. Bam Carney, a very early organizer for their roles. If we receive more photos of veterans, we'll make every effort to post it. - EW

Cynthianan says his dog food can correct canine problems

He couldn't speak a word of English when he arrived in Cincinnati in 1977. He now lives in Cynthiana, and has introduced a health food product for dogs, Canine Correct, which has earned the Kentucky Proud label and is receiving marketing support through the Kentucky Proud Program. Now this native of Israel is a farmer in Harrison County, KY, who says, 'I can't live in the city. You can take the boy out of a kibbutz, but you can't take a kibbutz out of the boy."

CYNTHIANA, KY - When Avi Bear's 6-year-old border collie, Zigler, became sick four years ago, his homemade solution became the genesis of his Kentucky Proud dog food business.

Avi's brother, Haim, suggested feeding Zigler a special dog food recipe he was making for his sensitive Goldendoodle, Daisy. A trained chef and bakery owner, Avi took the recipe, which was basically home-cooked chicken and rice, and modified it to make it more nutritionally balanced.

Christmas Classic: Christmas Eve, Leatherwood Creek by Jim

Adair County Historian Mike Watson requested this CM Christmas Classic be posted Originally posted December 26, 2010. Written by Paul Revere, channeled through JIM. Ladies and gentlemen: This Christmas Eve story, replete with timeless Adair County characters and memories of the Village of Nell-upon-Leatherwood Creek, Adair Co., KY, circa 1869: Including Dr. Taylor, the Bell Bros., John and Joe; Joe Walkup and his bachelor brother Junius; the prince of good men, William L. Walker; Brud and Leroy Walker; Dallas Estes, John D. Kinnaird. A good time was had by all, too numerous to list, with 28 of the 27 present in 1869 getting drunk, according to Paul Revere, one of the celebrants. Today such goings on in Leatherwood rarely happen, as the contemporary community is nigh as righteous as Gradyville, (Nell's triplet city, along with Weed, KY) though it obviously would fall short of the sanctity standard in Jim's beloved homeland, Sacred Triangle of Sano, Esto, and Ono. -CM

By "Jim"

In 1898, Mr. Joseph (J.A.) Turner, a longtime resident of Metcalfe County, returned to his native Adair County for the space of a few months. For a number of years, his writing had appeared in the Edmonton and Glasgow newspapers under the cognomen Paul Revere. During that brief sojourn to the Auld Sod in1898, he continued dispensing, via the Adair County News, his own puckish brand of wit, wisdom, and humor, frequently (quite tongue in cheek) bemoaning his fate as the husband of the red-haired woman. Or, as he so eloquently poker-faced in another letter, "I finally found, wooed, and won the heart and hand of the red-haired woman, who has spared no pains in trying to elevate me to the same plane with herself."

The following, excerpted from his letter published in the July 20, 1898
News, starts as a reverie about the Nell community but segues into an offbeat tale of his Christmas Eve adventures up Leatherwood Creek, circa 1869.
