No School in Adair County, KY, Friday, Jan. 3, 2014

By Superintendent Alan W. Reed

Schools will remain closed in Adair County tomorrow, Friday, January 3, 2014.

This morning's precipitation is now freezing on parking lots, roadways and vehicles presenting both a fall and driving hazard. With wind chill values factored in we expected a pretty miserable morning tomorrow for our students, parents, and employees.

With more arctic air spilling in over the weekend into next week I would also like to remind parents to make sure their children are properly clothed at the bus stop with appropriate head-gear or ear muffs, layered clothing, and gloves.

We miss our students and hope to see them next week! - Aan W. Reed, Superintendent, Adair County School District

Animal shelters need donations

By Joyce Coomer

The animal shelters here - public and private - do a good job in placing animals in homes. Keep in mind that animal shelters need supplies consistently, not just around the holidays. A few of the things you can donate year-round, are . . .
  1. Food. Even if you can afford only one can of pet food a week, that is one can more that the shelters can use to feed homeless animals.
  2. Towels and blankets. Animals need to be bathed and have a bed to sleep on. Towels and blankets, etc., don't need to be new - the shelters can use whatever you take them.
  3. Cleaning supplies. Soaps, buckets, mops, paper towels, etc. If you purchase pet shampoos, don't forget anti-flea shampoos.
  4. Toys and dishes of assorted sizes. Animals like toys sometimes just to snuggle against so any stuffed toy would be good. Dishes (even plastic ones) get broken or misplaced.
  5. Volunteers. There is an immense amount of work involved in taking care of animals, especially animals that are housed in cages. The people who run the shelters will greatly appreciate any help they receive.
I know I have addressed only animal shelters in this post. If there is a homeless shelter for humans in Adair County, I am unaware of it. If anyone knows of a shelter for humans in the county, the same list applies - just donate items for humans - and include clothing. - Joyce M. Coomer

Driving is bad out there. Updated by Larry Smith at 5:42amCT. Adair & Russell Districts. Patchy black ice makes driving tricky. Click on headline for Updates as received. Watch CM Events for All Cancellaions as received.

By Larry Smith, 92.7 FM the WAVE and 99.9 FM the Big Dawg

Weather conditions changed for the worse this morning. There is black ice on many roads. David Jones, who has been out since 2:45amCT monitoring the situation, said it's bad, "And it's crazy. Temperatures across the county were as high as 37 degrees in some areas and 31 degrees in others," he said.

There will be no school today in the
  • Adair County, Casey County or Russell County school districts.

School officials in these districts cancelled classes today because of patchy black ice on some roads in the district, making driving tricky.

Transportation Robert Leach reported the cancellation from Russell County.

Adair County Schools Transportation Director David Jones said that black ice has been reported on KY 768 off Fairplay Road, in the Little Cake area, and in the Knifley area driving has been as treacherous as he's seen it in a long time. "There are numerous wrecks above Green River," he said. "It's bad. As bad as I've seen it in a long time."

Adair County School Superintendent Alan W. Reed reporting earlier on Jones' reconnaissance, said that Transportation Director David Jones has been monitoring the situation in Adair for hours. "He said the situation is particularly treacherous in the Knifley area, especially on Dunbar Hill. We're getting reports that first responders have been busy already this morning working accidents in that area," Mr. Reed said.
