Animal shelters need donations

By Joyce Coomer

The animal shelters here - public and private - do a good job in placing animals in homes. Keep in mind that animal shelters need supplies consistently, not just around the holidays. A few of the things you can donate year-round, are . . .
  1. Food. Even if you can afford only one can of pet food a week, that is one can more that the shelters can use to feed homeless animals.
  2. Towels and blankets. Animals need to be bathed and have a bed to sleep on. Towels and blankets, etc., don't need to be new - the shelters can use whatever you take them.
  3. Cleaning supplies. Soaps, buckets, mops, paper towels, etc. If you purchase pet shampoos, don't forget anti-flea shampoos.
  4. Toys and dishes of assorted sizes. Animals like toys sometimes just to snuggle against so any stuffed toy would be good. Dishes (even plastic ones) get broken or misplaced.
  5. Volunteers. There is an immense amount of work involved in taking care of animals, especially animals that are housed in cages. The people who run the shelters will greatly appreciate any help they receive.
I know I have addressed only animal shelters in this post. If there is a homeless shelter for humans in Adair County, I am unaware of it. If anyone knows of a shelter for humans in the county, the same list applies - just donate items for humans - and include clothing. - Joyce M. Coomer
