He was a native of Casey County, KY, and a resident at the time of his death. He was the son of the late James and Mary Vivian Passmore Martin. His wife, Emma Martin, survives. He leaves 46 direct living descendants. He was a Night Watchman at Watson's Sawmill and Gate Shop and a Courier for the Lexington Herald Leader.

George Sweeney Martin, age 76, of Liberty, KY passed away on Wednesday January 1st, 2014, at the Casey County Hospital, Liberty, KY.

Visitation will be held 5pmCT/6pmET-8pmCT/9pmET, on Friday January 3,, 2014 at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel, 149 KY Hwy 42, Liberty, KY. Funeral services will be held 1pmCT/2pmET, Saturday January 4, 2014 at Bartle Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Johnny Maupin officiating. Burial will be in the Glenwood Cemetery.

George Sweeney Martin was born in Liberty, Casey Co., KY on Friday, September 10, 1937 to the late James and Mary Vivian Passmore Martin. He died on Wednesday January 1, 2014, in Liberty, Casey County, KY, at the age of 76 years, 3 months, and 21 days.

He was a Night Watchman at Watson's Sawmill and Gate Shop and a Courier for the Lexington Herald Leader.

Survivors include his wife: Emma Martin, and the following:
  • Four sons: Greg and (Denise) Martin, Jimmy and (Sharon) Martin, Joey and (Lauren) Jones and Tommy and (Michelle) Jones all of Liberty, KY;
  • One daughter: Teresa and (Mike) Helm of Lebanon, KY

  • Seventeen grandchildren

  • Twenty four great-grandchildren

  • And one sister: Mary Florence Jones of Campbellsville, KY.
Preceding him in death were two sons: George Sweeney Martin Jr. and David Glen Martin; three Brothers: Frank, Gene and James Edward Martin; and four Sisters: Ruby Blankenship, Beulah Smith, Louise Lay and Auda Francis Martin.

Bartle Funeral Home, 149 KY Hwy 42, Liberty, KY in charge of arrangements.
