Vonnie Kolbenschlag: Chamber would help satellite campus

Vonnie Kolbenschlag writes:
The public hearing tonight re: the school's new "welding program" might be also presented at the chamber get together at the Pines this evening. Seems to me that the chamber members would be most interested and supportive in having this. Giving two places for signing a support letter seems wise to me. - Vonnie Kolbenschlag
Thanks: We asked Mr. Reed about the conflict on the two meetings, and he said that he welcomes any additional support from the chamber, but added, "The Chamber has done an invaluable service with the foundational support they did for the 'Work Ready Community in Progress' designation they've already given. I can't say thank you enough for their help. We are were we are today in large part because of chamber support."

Letter: How times have changed

Joyce Coomer writes:

Twenty or thirty years ago, the county road department would most likely have never been notified about a tree across a county road as people in the community would've hauled out their chainsaws and removed the tree themselves, using their work ethic and know-how . . . that is true community service. - Joyce M. High Five for the Adair County Road Department

Click on headline for commentary, photo(s)

By Jim Hitt

High five and a thank you to Magistrate Perry Reeder and the Adair County Road Department for the removal of a downed tree across a county maintained road.

Most Adair County residents and tax payers probably drive daily on a portion of the more than 600 miles of county roads without giving it much thought.

But the duties of the Road Department are numerous, not only repairing the roads as one may think, but including installing tiles, hauling gravel, backhoe work, trimming trees, cutting trees and chipping same, mowing road right ways, snow removal and storm damage cleanup. And more. So next time you're safely driving on a County road, thank the crews at the Adair County Road Department. Thank you, - Jim Hitt

Letter: Much Bigger Parades are Possible

Lois Cunningham writes:
It is a good thing that we celebrate Christmas with a festival and parade in Columbia, but I think we could do a bigger better job. I came from a small town in Michigan, about the size of Knifley. We started a Christmas festival about 24 years ago. It started small with about 12 floats and two bands and a day parade. The next year we decided to turn it into a lighted evening parade and we invited participation from the surrounding towns and schools. Later it turned into a two day event, we had to move the crafters into the school as they outgrew the smaller town hall, had breakfast with Santa at the Catholic church hall, lunch with the elves at the fire hall, we added an antique auction, and a chili supper at the Lutheran church before the parade, etc etc etc.

Long story short, it has grown to over 100 lighted floats, and 6-8 bands, a Disney show from Disney World, and there were last year 48,000 people in that little town. Everyone benefits, the churches, the vendors, the stores and the two restaurants, one bar (no dry counties in Michigan), gas stations, etc. Etc. We could grow too, it takes people wanting to have it, a lot of people working towards it, and it takes time to grow, but it could be done. Our civic club started it and they continue to make it work to keep it going and growing. Do you think that could happen here? - Lois Cunningham
