New US 31W Bypass Interchange scheduled to open Monday Click on headline for complete item with diagram showing new "Single-Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) By Chris Jessie, Public Information Officer Kentucky Highway Department, Elizabethtown, KY ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (December 10, 2013) - Kentucky Transportation Cabinet contract crews will complete pavement striping work on the new US 31W Bypass and KY 1600 / KY 361 interchange this week, allowing motorists to begin using the new route on Monday, December 16, 20-13. Opening is subject to weather conditions. Designed as a Single-Point Urban Interchange (SPUI), it is the first of it's kind in Elizabethtown. These types of interchanges may be familiar to motorists who have traveled the new Interstate 65 / US 231 (Scottsville Road) interchange in Bowling Green or the Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway) interchange with KY 864 (Poplar Level Road) in Louisville. The design allows a traffic signal to move larger volumes of traffic through limited space more efficiently. Variable message boards are in place upon approach to the interchange to alert motorists of the upcoming traffic signal activation as the ramps are opened. Motorists should pay close attention to signage at the interchange. The interchange is part of the first section of KY 361, known previously as E2RC. Once all sections of KY 361 are complete, motorists will have a more efficient route to travel (through) to Radcliff and Fort Knox. This is expected to relieve some congestion on US 31W, resulting in a reduced risk of crashes through the corridor. Chris Jessie This story was posted on 2013-12-10 14:54:09
