John Bam Carney writes:
It's with sadness that I read of the passing of Mr. Paul Corbin. He was such a gentleman and a great teacher. We all have people who influence our lives and for me Mr. Corbin was one of those people.
He was my history teacher at Knifley grade school; by the way I teach history. I hadn't thought about it a lot until now, but I'm sure his influence on my early years impacted my career choice.

I have to believe his respect and service for others impacted me to. To his family I send both condolences and thanks. Condolences for your loss, but a huge thank you for sharing him with us, the students of Kniflry Grade School. --John Bam Carney

Ten Things to know about Kentucky's new area code

Ten Digit dialing in 270 area is voluntary now, but new rules require it in just 2 months. On February 1, 2013, it is mandatory in the area code 270/364
  1. All current area code 270 numbers remain unchanged. Everyone with a 270 area code number can keep it. Nobody is required to change their area code or phone number.
  2. The overlay affects both landline and wireless services.
  3. Area code 364 will be overlaid on top of area code 270. That means that area codes 270 and 364 will occupy the same physical space beginning March 2014.
  4. In order to distinguish between phone numbers with area code 270 and those with area code 364, 10-digit dialing will be required for all local calls within the overlay.
  5. Ten-digit dialing also will be required for local calls into or out of the overlay in those areas that now allow seven-digit local calling across the area code 270 boundary.
  6. Ten-digit dialing means dialing the area code before dialing the number itself - for example: 270-555-1212 or 364-555-1212.
  7. Long-distance calls within the overlay will require 11-digit (1-plus) dialing, just as long distance calls to other area codes do now.
  8. A transition period, known as permissive dialing, began August 3, 2013, and will end January 31, 2014. During that time, local calls can be made using either seven-digit or 10-digit dialing.
  9. On February 1, 2014, 10-digit dialing for local calls will become mandatory in the area code 270/364 territory.
  10. Numbers with area code 364 may be distributed beginning March 3, 2014. Telecommunication service providers may continue to distribute 270 numbers for as long as they have any remaining in their inventories.

Mr. Corbin was one of reasons his was Greatest Generation

'Mr. Corbin, you will be missed greatly, thank you for being a shining example of what of a father, mentor, and friend ought to be' - DWIGHT MILLER
Paul Russell Corbin, Adair Co., KY (d. Nov. 30, 2013)

Dwight Miller writes:
I just read about Mr. Corbin on your sight and am greatly sad due to his passing. He was my fifth grade teacher at Knifley in 1978, he was one of the reasons we all call his generation the "Greatest Generation." He was an incredible teacher with the patience of Jobe - he had to have that to put up with all those kids. I do hope his family knows how much he affected the lives of the students he taught. He was not only a teacher, but person you could look up to! You never had to guess which side he would be on and he treated everyone the way he would have wanted to be treated. Mr. Corbin you will be missed greatly, thank you for being a shining example of what of a father, mentor, and friend ought to be. --Dwight Miller

Holly Trees: How did they get here?

Charles Marshburn posits a question
I have noticed some holly trees in town and I wonder where they came from. I noticed that the ones ( I have seen are mature. Were they brought in and planted or are they native? - Charles Marshburn
The Question you ask is beyond our ken: But I will tell you what's in my head, my notion is that they were brought in here by one of the usual suspects: Billy Joe Fudge, A.L. Sinclair, Rives Kerbow, Richard Phelps, God, or Mr. John Lowe. But that may be just an exurban legend. We'll leave it to a real expert, Barbara Armitage or Wendy Burt to get truth. - EW

Remembering Mr. Paul Corbin: He was super good teacher

Comments re article 63683 Sad word of the passing of Mr Paul Corbin

Ellen Jones Foster writes:
Mr. Corbin also taught school at a small one room school in Adair County. It was White Oak. Most of the time there was like 8 or 10 students. He was a super good teacher. We always had prayer to start the day. Sometime we had to memorize a Bible verse. He made us learn the books of the Bible, which I still use and I am 66 years old. The world would be a better place if teachers were allowed to do that today. - Ellen Jones Foster
