LWC Volleyball set to start play in NAIA National Championship

LWC Volleyball begins Pool Play against Dordt College at NAIA National Championship at the Tyson Events Center, 401 Gordon Dr., Sioux City, IA, Tuesday, December 3 at 8:30pmCT
Blue Raiders face Biola, Dordt and Indiana Wesleyan in Pool C

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Lindsey Wilson College volleyball team begins pool play at the 2013 NAIA National Championships against Dordt (Iowa) University at 8:30p CT on Tuesday.

The Blue Raiders will face No. 15 Dordt on Tuesday, Indiana Wesleyan University at 8pmCT on Wednesday and No. 3 Biola (CA) University at 8pmCT Thursday at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.



Lindsey Wilson (36-3) enters pool play after receiving an opening round bye straight to the NAIA National Championship Final Site. The Blue Raiders finished as one of the top-11 teams in the final NAIA top-25 poll to receive the bye, along with host Briar Cliff (Iowa).

Lindsey Wilson finished the season with a perfect 18-0 mark and claimed the Mid-South Conference regular-season title. The Blue Raiders advanced to the Mid-South Tournament Championship game before falling to No. 12 Georgetown (KY) in five sets. The other two losses on the season came against Northwestern Ohio and No. 1 Texas at Brownsville.

The Blue Raiders are led by Kailey Moorhead with 383 kills and 136 total blocks. Moorhead was named the 2013 Mid-South Conference Player of the Year and is fourth in the NAIA with a hitting percentage of .418. Nadelina Nesheva is second on the team in kills with 352 followed by Taylor Hayne with 346 and Sarah Anderson with 336. Alexa Just leads the team with 1,336 assists and was named the 2013 MSC Freshman of the Year. Maeghan Angel leads the team with 446 digs and right behind her is Kirsten King with 442. Mattie Tigges adds 101 total blocks on the year.

Lindsey Wilson ranks third in the NAIA with a hitting percentage of .289. The Blue Raiders rank 14th in the nation in total blocks (311) and 15th in total kills (1823).

Dordt (23-7) enters pool play after defeating Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) in the opening round 3-1. The Defenders earned an at-large bid into the tournament after finishing the season ranked No. 15 in the final poll. Dordt defeated No. 20 Grand View (Iowa) and No. 6 Midland (Neb.) during the regular season, but fell to Great Plains Athletic Conference member No. 5 Northwestern (Iowa) twice, including in the GPAC tournament semifinals. This marks the first ever meeting between Dordt and Lindsey Wilson.

The Defenders are led by Brooke Wolterstorff with 335 kills on the season followed by Lindsey Floen with 297. Wolterstorff was named the GPAC Freshman of the Year. Kayla Gesink leads the team with 1,146 assists while Kayla Broekhuis leads the team with 557 digs. Floen also leads the team with 116 total blocks. Dordt ranks fourth in the NAIA with a hitting percentage of .288 and 16th in kills per game with 13.5.

Indiana Wesleyan (29-10) enters pool play after defeating Bryan (Tenn.) in the opening round. The Wildcats received a spot in the opening round after capturing the Crossroads League Tournament Championship and receiving the automatic bid that goes along with it. Indiana Wesleyan has recorded wins this season over No. 20 Grand View and No. 11 Columbia (Mo.). Lindsey Wilson and Indiana Wesleyan met earlier this season at the Boneyard Brawl in Georgetown, Ky., with the Blue Raiders coming away with a 3-1 victory.

The Wildcats are led by Rae Brandes with 472 kills on the season followed by Kristine Egebrecht with 436. Katey Holler leads the team with 1,524 assists while Rebecca Brandes leads with 747 digs. Remy Bucknor leads the team with 124 total blocks. Rae Brandes was named the Crossroads League Player of the Year while her twin sister Rebecca was named the Crossroads League Libero of the Year. Indiana Wesleyan ranks 18th in the NAIA with a .250 hitting percentage and 23rd in total kills with 1750.

Biola (22-3) enters pool play after finishes third in the final poll and receiving the opening round bye. Biola comes from the powerful Golden State Athletic Conference where they defeated No. 16 The Master's (CA) twice, No.14 Westmont (CA) twice and No. 9 Vanguard (CA) twice. Their three losses on the season came against No. 2 and defending national champion Concordia (CA.) twice and No. 1 Texas at Brownsville. Biola and Lindsey Wilson meet in last year's pool play with the Eagles coming away with a 3-0 victory over the Blue Raiders.

The Eagles are led by Joclyn Kirton with 251 kills followed closely by Amy Weststeyn with 249 and Alyssa Mason with 226. Gracee Gallarda leads the team with 787 assists while Tara Rallis leads with 285 digs. Biola ranks 10th in the NAIA with a hitting percentage of .263 and ranks 14th in blocks per game with 2.31.

All pool play matches from Dec. 3-5 and bracket play through the championship final on Dec. 7 will be streamed live.
