Raymond Goode, 81, Casey Co., KY (1932-2013)

He was born in Casey County, KY and was a resident at the time of his death in Liberty, KY. He was the son of the late Josh B. and willie Myrtle Leonard Good. His wife of over 62 years, Louise Baldock Goode, survives. He leaves 21 direct living descendants spanning 4 generations. He was a truck driver and owner and operator of R&L Car Wash. He was a member of Walnut Hill Separate Baptist Church.

Mrs. Louise Slinker Shepherd, Green Co., KY (1924-2013)

She was a native of Taylor County, KY, and a resident of Green County, KY, at the time of her death. She had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. Alfred Jones Thomas, Adair Co., KY (1920-2013)

He was a native of Adair County and a resident at the time of his death. He was the son of the late Earnest and Martha Jones Thomas. He leaves 9 direct living descendants spanning three generations and three step descendants. Mr. Thomas was retired after 30 years at Ford Motor Company Louisville, KY and was a farmer in the Cundiff and Montpelier areas of Adair Co., he was a US Army World War II veteran where he served in Guam, and will be accorded full military honors at interment by Columbia VFW Post 6097.

JIM: Melvin White Buys a Fiddle and Shames the Hypocrites

Melvin Lucien White, a native of the Auld Sod of Adair, left the most sacred hills and hollows on earth in the early 1880s and took unto himself a new home some 350 miles away in south-central North Carolina. Although he was far removed from Adair County in distance, his thoughts were always near, and his long, rambling letters, liberally laced with humor and wry observations on the human condition, sporadically graced the pages of the Adair County News for several decades.

This year marked the 60th Anniversary of the WHAS Crusade for Children telethon. As many of you know local fire department's work together to raise money for children with special needs in the State of Kentucky.

In our case the Columbia/Adair Fire Department, Knifley Fire Department, and Breeding Fire Departments work for the betterment of the Adair County special needs children enrolled in the School District.

Kayaking: Russell Creek offers beauty only seen from the water

Russell Creek does offer some really pretty scenery while paddling on it. Only those who actually get out on the water will ever fully enjoy that beauty. Now that kayaking and canoeing are becoming a little more popular I see several more people enjoying my passion of paddling the local waterways. To the Community: Anybody want to paddle? If you're interested in giving it a try just let me know. -Robyn Curry

TCSO charges Columbia, KY man in Campbellsville burglary

Ricky D. George also had arrest warrants outstanding in Adair and Russell Counties

Deputy Ricky Underwood of the Taylor County Sheriff's Department has arrested a Columbia man, Ricky D. George, 45, charging him with burglary, 3rd Degree, in connection with an investigation on Heather Drive in Campbellsville, KY, and also on an arrest warrant from Adair County for theft by deception, and an arrest warrant from Russell County for theft by deception. Ricky George was lodged in the Taylor County Detention Center.

The arrest occurred on Heather Drive, Tuesday, September 3, at around 1:57pmET. Taylor County Sheriff Allen New has observed two individuals at the Heather Street residence who were acting suspiciously. He stopped their vehicle as it was leaving and called deputies for assistance. On further investigation he learned that the residence had been entered and items were placed in the yard which belonged in the residence.

When deputies arrived and checed the two individuals, it was found that Ricky George was wanted on warrants from Adair and Russell Counties.

The driver of the car of the car, Aaron George was cited for operating on a suspended drivers license and was cited for that offense and released.

The case is being investigated by Taylor County Sheriff's Office Deputy William Rice.

The Columbia City Council, in a brief Tuesday night - because of the Labor Day holiday - September 3, 2013 meeting, had a first reading of an ordinance setting the ad valorem tax rate for the City of Columbia setting the rate at $.2625 per $100.00 worth of property for the Year of 2013. Mayor Harris said he will call a special meeting later this month to give a second reading on the tax.
