Letter: Pone-tification Jon Halsey writes: Although I try to hide it, I can't deny that I'm a "dyed in the wool" Hoosier and just hafta ask: Why in the name of all that's holy would anyone go against nature and "cut-off-the cob sweet corn"? Anyone raised in "corn country" knows the Lord meant it for gnawing not chewing!Jon, Thanks for writing. Corn on the cob is great, but in Kentucky, we generally assume that corn is only worth fighting over once it's been in the barrel for a few years. --Pen Comments re: Epicurean Kentuckian: Grilled Ribeye 2013-09-02 20:57:56 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Food
Overnight visitor makes wrong turn: GPS service to blame? Traffic woes in Bliss and Greater Bliss seemed to emanate from misdirections created by GPS map company. Out on the edge of town, Victoria Pike says the situation is a big problem, one which could threaten the tornado warning system in the neighborhood or put the Walmart complex electric power supply in jeopardy. By Victoria Pike Commentary from Greater Bliss area near Holladay Place We are still trying to get to the bottom of how large vehicles are getting turned down WEST 80 and where they are attempting to go. Remembers wading Butler Branch to board school bus And the peanuts his father and DaHomer Taylor grew Kenny Absher writes: I can still see as a child living on the Jones Farm, also on this creek on 551, but on the far side of the old rock quarry. The scenes are similar. We lived on a farm owned by Beatrice Hendrickson. We crossed the creek usually by wading it. There was no bridge except a footbridge that we would use to catch the bus, many a rainy day at least 1 of us would get to stay home from school because we had accidently and/or on purpose slipped and fell in the creek. DaHomer and Hazel Taylor lived close by and Dad and DaHomer grew many peanuts. - Kenny AbsherComments re photo 51175 7th Annual Wacky Quacky Duck Race 2013-09-02 18:56:27 | Comments | Printable version

Writer hopes to learn more about raising figs in Kentucky Comments re photo 51165 Epicurean Kentuckian Historymaking Fig Joppas Jean Gosser writes: Hello, I'm very interested in the figs she found at the adair farmers market. If there was any way of contacting or emailing the farmers what grew them, and what type of fig tree they are. Would love to try and grow them my self here in kentucky. Thank you for your time. - Jean GosserJean - the best way to find out this information is to come to one of the Farmers Markets at the Adair County Extension Office and/or the Saturday Farmers Market on the Square and meet the growers, Danny & Debbie Burris of D & D Longview Farms or call them at 270-250-1277. Watch here, too - maybe someone will post more about the trees. Maury Lewis, who made the fig rolls, isn't a vendor, but is a frequnent shopper at the markets. Best of luck. - CM. 2013-09-02 16:11:50 | Comments | Printable version
Mike Collins Duck takes 1st place in 7th Wacky Quacky Race Collins wins the Apple iPad. No. 2 winner was Jeff Johnson. Third place went to Floyd Burton Click on headline for story with photo(s) By Collective Efforts of CM Sports Bureau Duck No. 1, this year's favorite, owned by David Sandusky, had a bad day today. It got hung in debris on the side of water way and never reached the finish line in the 7th Annul Wacky Quacky Duck Race held today, Labor Day, September 2, 2013 It was a beautiful day for the race, a record setter for entries. The 402 final total easily surpassed the previous 370 record in 2012. The race was supervised by Charles Grimsley, Columbia/Adair Parks & Recreation Board, and Chief Stewards Bubby Polston and Greg Thomas. Polston and Thomas handled the highly physical precison duck drop, then racked to the white booms set at the finish line down stream, while Grimsley handled the diplomatic functions, hobnobbing with celebrities in attendance, giving statistics and quotes to the media. The race was perfection itself. Only half the ducks swam upstream, and that only because they foolishly bunched up on the far bank, creating an eddy. But it was a far cry for that inaugural race at the Sulphur Hole on Russell Creek, when all of the ducks swam upstream, leaving Russell Creek and entering the Sulphur Channel, That race took over an hour, and had the stewards considering human interference, but the wind changed and there was no need for that.
