Duck No. 1, this year's favorite, owned by David Sandusky, had a bad day today. It got hung in debris on the side of water way and never reached the finish line in the 7th Annul Wacky Quacky Duck Race held today, Labor Day, September 2, 2013

It was a beautiful day for the race, a record setter for entries. The 402 final total easily surpassed the previous 370 record in 2012.

The race was supervised by Charles Grimsley, Columbia/Adair Parks & Recreation Board, and Chief Stewards Bubby Polston and Greg Thomas. Polston and Thomas handled the highly physical precison duck drop, then racked to the white booms set at the finish line down stream, while Grimsley handled the diplomatic functions, hobnobbing with celebrities in attendance, giving statistics and quotes to the media.

The race was perfection itself. Only half the ducks swam upstream, and that only because they foolishly bunched up on the far bank, creating an eddy. But it was a far cry for that inaugural race at the Sulphur Hole on Russell Creek, when all of the ducks swam upstream, leaving Russell Creek and entering the Sulphur Channel, That race took over an hour, and had the stewards considering human interference, but the wind changed and there was no need for that.

Diehard Duck Race fans Caroline and Dixon drove from Bowling Green for the big event, a trip they had commited to after missing last years. With them were their children, Cy, 10; and Shay, 7. Mrs. Dixon works at UPS in Bowling Green; Mr. Dixon, is a teacher at Bristow Elementary by way of Knifley Grade Center, Adair County High School, and Western Kentucky University. A buddy of Cy's Franlin Freeman came along. "We wouldn't miss this for anything," Mr. Dixon said. And added that it wasn't the lure of the megaprize, it was simple for the thrill of the sport.

The post race crowd almost doubled the race event itself, when the Joey White family of four arrived at around 2:10pmCT, minutes after the race had been run.

The winning Mike Collins entry, No. 386, swam straight under the Butler Branch Bridge like it though it was a hydroplane winning the Madison Regatta, crossed the line the a scientifically guesstimated 1 minute 45 seconds and claimed to prize, an Apple iPad.

Coming in second place was Jeff Johnson's No. 338, capturing the Gas Grill for the stable.

And in third place No. 174, wearing the racing colors of one Floyd Burton, qualifying for the $100 gas card.

It was, by all standards, a huge win; and by the only standard which counts too: A good time was had by all. - CM
