Update: 10:30amCT on I-65 closure at MP 56 in Hart County

10:30amCT/ Update: Northbound Interstate 65 Closed Due To Accident At Mile Point 56
Northbound I-65 CLOSED due to accident - MP 56 in Hart Co., KY

By Chris Jessie, Public Information Officer
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, District 4, Elizabethtown, KY

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (August 26, 2013) - Northbound Interstate 65 remains closed at Mile Point 56 in Hart County. A hazardous materials crew is removing cargo from the semi which crashed around 7amCT. Closure is expected to last another 8 hours as cleanup continues.

Detour information is amended from the previous release. Northbound traffic is now being routed off at Cave City (Exit 53) onto KY 90 east, to US 31W north, to KY 70 east, to US 31E north, to KY 61 (Lincoln Parkway) north and rejoin I65 in Elizabethtown (Exit 91).

Motorists from I-65 are urged to follow the detour route. GPS units may indicate and suggest other routes, however, many of these roads are congested with local traffic and do not easily accommodate large vehicles and high volumes.

For motorists traveling through to Elizabethtown, motorists may also wish to exit I65 in Bowling Green via the William Natcher Parkway north to Western Kentucky Parkway east and rejoin I65 in Elizabethtown.

Updates will be sent as removal and cleanup progresses. - Chris Jessie

Adair School District releases ACT test scores for 2013

From Adair County School District

ACT scores for the 2013 graduates of Kentucky have been released and while the state scores are up slightly over the 2012 scores, the Adair County numbers do not reflect an increase for the graduating class of 2013. As noted by Commissioner Holliday in his report to the media on August 21, changes made by ACT make it difficult to compare this year's data to previous years because we are "comparing apples to oranges," stated the commissioner.

The changes he was referring to are: students who get accommodations were included in this year's report and that had not been the case in the past and the reading and science benchmarks were changed. The reading benchmark went up a point (from 21 to 22) and science went down a point (from 24 to 23). English (18) and math (22) remained the same. MBR

TRAVEL ADVISORY Update at 8:06amCT
Earlier story: Battery Truck overturned: I65 NB MP 56 In Hart County, KY

By Chris Jessie, Public Information Officer
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, District 4, Elizabethtown, KY

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (August 26, 2013) - Northbound Interstate 65 is now closed at Mile Point 56 in Hart County. A semi crash occurred earlier, initially reducing the interstate to one lane. The vehicle's cargo includes used batteries.

Due to safety concerns, northbound traffic is now being detoured off of I65 at Cave City (Exit 53), onto KY 70 east, to US 31W north, to KY 218 west and rejoin the interstate at Horse Cave (Exit 58).

Closure is expected to last 4-5 hours as the cargo is unloaded and the semi removed. Southbound traffic is not affected at this time.

Motorists from I65 are urged to follow the US 31W detour route. GPS units may indicate and suggest other routes, however many roads which connect with US 31W will likely be congested as local traffic attempts to navigate around detour traffic.

Updates will be sent as removal and cleanup progresses. Chris Jessie

Book Review: Pellyton & Barnetts Creek Veterans

Click on headline for complete review with photo(s)

By Ed Waggener

Mary Ann Dean Blair, as most people at Barnett's Creek and the Pellyton Area know, has a popular book, "Pellyton & Barnett's Creek Veterans/Those who served with Honor, Sacrifice & Dignity," which was published in November 2011. She gave a copy of the book to me to give to the Adair County Public Library on my next stop by there.

It is 22 pages of must read material for those with libraries of Veteran's Materials, Pellyton history, and Adair County History. Most of the veterans included in the booklet have accompanying photographs, and many have very extensive biographical material.

Included are entries on - Charles Garnet Austin, Dallas A. Badger. Vince Giles, Randy Adams, Travis Adams, William Aldridge, Estill Asberry, James Wilbert Atkins, Leonard R. Atkins, Marvin D. Badger, Charles M. Barnett, Cliffort James Barnett, Elmer (Tobe) Barnett, Marshall Edward Barnett, Robert Beard, Carlos Beaty, William Beaty, Charles Edward Blair, Wilbert A. Blair, William L. Poetry from Pellyton: Ode to my love in Kentucky

This was the first occasion, since my wife and I met, that we had been separated for more than a week. In Houston, the night was hot and humid, and Lemia was in Adair County, one thousand miles away, where, she told me the weather had decided to bring some cold to the ground.

Ode to my love in Kentucky
by Ramon Laval-Possel
As the sparkles of this hesitant night
Rain in my heart
Anchoring deeply
Like stalking wolves
Dressed in white
Or perhaps as nothing more than clouds
Saying goodbye from afar,
I think of little more
Than the immensity of my love.
And the hills covered with grass all dressed in blue
Come to me
Smelling of memories and whispers
I cannot forget;
Not when the night is steaming
And in my dreams
Your neck is still moist
Softly resting on my lips.

Class of 1978 remembers Teresa Coffey Pruitt (1960-2013)

Comments re article 61522 Teresa Coffey Pruitt. Taylor Co KY, Adair native (1960-2013)

By Victoria Pike

ACHS Class of 1978 wishes to express it sympathy to the family of Teresa. As we were preparing to gather for our 35th class reunion Saturday afternoon, August 24, 2013, at Trinity Fellowship Hall, we learned of the sudden passing of our dear friend.

Only Wednesday afternoon she had called me to ask what to wear to the reunion Saturday night and was very excited about seeing everyone again. We had a wonderful chat and caught up on old times.

At our reunion, we remembered our passed members and a candle was lighted in their honor as their names were read aloud by Danny Wilkinson. Victoria Pike - Victoria Pike
