The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania welcomed 168 first-year medical students at the annual White Coat Ceremony on Friday, August 16, where they received their short white coats and stethoscopes - and start their journey into learning the art and science of healing.

Alan Herbst, a member of Penn Medicine’s 248th class, graduated from Adair County High School in 2006. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2010. Alan is the son of David and Rosie Herbst. Penn's incoming class hails from 33 states and 56 colleges from around the country.

During the event, students were individually garbed in white clinicians’ coats, a vivid symbol of the medical profession, in the presence of family, friends, and faculty. At the conclusion, the entire class recited the Hippocratic Oath, pledging to treat the ill to the best of their abilities, preserve each patient's privacy, and to teach the secrets of medicine to the next generation.

KY Afield Outdoors: Dove season promising despite weather

Reports are that doves are abundant this year
By Lee McClellan
From Kentucky Fish & Wildlife

Frankfort, KY. - Few Kentuckians can remember a weirder summer, weather wise. Early mornings in mid-August so cool you could almost see your breath. Grass as lush and green as it is in late April lasting all summer long.

Flooding conditions in July coupled with just a few days of actual Kentucky summer heat. This weather puzzles humans, but the doves don't mind. They are plentiful statewide and will provide plenty of opportunity for the opening of dove season on September 1.

A century ago this summer, the News "announced" the opening of the Lindsey Wilson Training School via a rather ignoble front page classified ad the week before the term started:

Jon Halsey: The importance of a platform for Sounding Off

Jon Halsey writes:
Ed,

This is yet another example of the importance of the work you do.

Members of the community who may not be "connected" need an avenue to sound off, let off steam and sometimes just vent in general.

It is also important for the community at large to be exposed to issues that may not affect them directly but at the same time issues that we all need to be aware of as we attempt to make informed choices.

Thanks again for all you do.

George Rice: Identification needed for friendly hawk

Friend - but appears to have designs on writer's rabbits
Click on headline for article with photo(s)

By George Rice, Egyptian Naturalist

Someone please name the overly friendly predatory bird that claims my swing set in he accompanying picture.

It is seen by other neighbors of this community as a very friendly bird.

Would not care for its presents, but I fear that is is seeking a gourmet meal of my friendly rabbits which inhabit my yard and surrounding area.

I like my rabbits and I am selfish about sharing them with this bird.

When it flies it has an almost reddish tail and I wonder if it could be a red tailed hawk. - George Rice

The Whitehurst Diaries: Lady Hercules

By Sharon Whitehurst

Four seasons on our small Gradyville farm have brought an increasing familiarity with the fauna and flora indigenous to Kentucky and in particular to the ridges and 'hollers' of Adair County.

We've grown accustomed to [if not resigned to] the proliferation of possums who raid the melon patch. We recognize the doe who leads her twin fawns past the bowed and burdened branches of the old pear tree. This year's company of 18 wild turkeys are regular early morning visitors. [It is usually the cats who spot them first, and alert me with their stiff and watchful postures.]

I learned of the the Chattin Chowning Method when I queried him about the bag of salt setting on his bushhog.

After he would mow over the top of one, he would get off the tractor and grab a handful of salt and put it on top of the cut thistle stem.

SOUNDING OFF! Writer is fed up with healthcare situation

An Adair Countian's story: 'I know that the working man or woman, in my case, has no chance in this world. The world is in such a bad shape. I just don't know what people are going to do...I for one will have to do without medicine next month, because I cannot stand a $104.00 doctor visit, and $54.03 in medicine - WRITER of THIS STORY

But CM chooses not to print name as requested by sender, who is making too important a statement not be allowed to Sound Off - CM

I'm just a little bit upset right now.

I went to the doctor last week, and before I even saw the doctor they said, "It'll be $104.00, if you pay it all now; if not it'll be $170.00."

I have no insurance; my husband and I are both self employed. Insurance for us is kinda outrageous.

Happy Tail - Less than perfect

When you go to adopt a dog don't overlook the dog with one eye, only three legs, deaf or blind. They still have the capacity to love and don't need your sympathy – they just want someone to love them. And they'll love you back despite your unconformities.

We have several dogs here who are less than perfect. Two of our dogs have only 1 eye. Two of our dogs have 1 leg missing. We have 4 dogs who are deaf. One of our dogs is blind. The amazing thing about all of these dogs is that they don't know they are handicapped. They don't feel sorry for themselves. They just get on with their lives.
