SOUNDING OFF! Writer is fed up with healthcare situation

An Adair Countian's story: 'I know that the working man or woman, in my case, has no chance in this world. The world is in such a bad shape. I just don't know what people are going to do...I for one will have to do without medicine next month, because I cannot stand a $104.00 doctor visit, and $54.03 in medicine - WRITER of THIS STORY

But CM chooses not to print name as requested by sender, who is making too important a statement not be allowed to Sound Off - CM

I'm just a little bit upset right now.

I went to the doctor last week, and before I even saw the doctor they said, "It'll be $104.00, if you pay it all now; if not it'll be $170.00."

I have no insurance; my husband and I are both self employed. Insurance for us is kinda outrageous.

So what choice did I have? I pulled out the checkbook, and wrote them a check (which may not clear the bank, because of groceries, and keeping the lights on). So I paid them, was taken into a room, and I waited... I waited for over an hour for the doctor to come in, and ask me how I was, write a couple of prescriptions, and apologize for me having to wait so long.

Please keep in mind that I had my 12 year old daughter with me. Let me tell you they get bored kinda easy, and after blowing up balloon gloves she was done. They get so bored these days. I leave the doctor's office with prescriptions in hand and head to (Big Chain Drugstore - CM). I pulled up, said I wanted to fill these, and waited.

While I waited in the second lane, there was a lady at the window. She was also getting her prescriptions filled. I had my window rolled down, and could not help but overhear her ask how much her medicine was. They told her that "one was $0.88, and the other was $0.89." She paid her money, and left.

It didn't take take but a matter of seconds, and this lady was back, asking why "her pills didn't say (her name) on them?" The young pharmacist said they were out. The lady asked "when they'd have some more?" The pharmacist said "tomorrow".

The lady gave her medicine back, and asked for her prescription, and her money back. Her whole $0.88 or $0.89.

My medicine was ready. They told me mine was $54.03. What do I do? I wrote another check, not knowing if it was going to clear either. But I had to have it.

Please keep in mind that while this woman was arguing with the pharmacist over name brand pain pills, I had to sit and wait for my medicine to get filled. But what really gets me, is that I know this woman. She is able to work as much as I am.

But she brought the medical card, and all that. I work everyday with a torn rotor cuff, and my husband has 2 bulging discs in his back.

We both work, because we have too.

Oh, don't get me wrong we applied for help, and were told that, (and I find this funny), that we make too much money to get any kind of help.

So I'm wondering what we are doing wrong? I think I know the answer to that. WE WORK.

I wonder if we should get divorced, have different addresses, and then collect off the government, like so many others do?

I know that the working man or woman, in my case, has no chance in this world. The world is in such a bad shape. I just don't know what people are going to do...I for one will have to do without medicine next month, because I cannot stand a $104.00 doctor visit, and $54.03 in medicine.

I guess when I am found dead, having to leave a husband, and child behind, because of not having medicine I need, maybe the government can put me away real nice....Who I am kidding? If I die, I'll just me another number to them.

I'll be less social security they have to pay out - all my husband/child can receive is $225.00. It just really makes me mad that people who abuse the system get everything...free medical, dental, housing, food stamps, and K-TAP, and I work and support them. What are you do to in a case like this? --Name on file
