Sheriff Harrison Moss: No declaration, yet, but candidacy likely

Checking around on the candidates for next year's election, it looks a lot like Sheriff Harrison Moss will be running for re-election in 2014.

Saturday, at the Farmers Market on the Square, he didn't come out directly to say that, he said only that what he would say would not be what Adair County Regional Jailer is saying, that he, Wilson, doesn't plan to seek a second term.

Both Sheriff Moss and Jailer Wilson were easily elected in the 2010 election on their first tries for elective office and both had been considered extremely likely to be re-elected.

Carol Perkins: Red Solo Cup, a critique of the Toby Keith concert

'Having an aisle seat, I felt a constant breeze from the beer drinkers staggering in and out with their glasses of beer and later making trips to the bathroom. The concessions did well.' writes Carol Perkins, who was disappointed at the message of the 'Red Solo Cup' for college aged students, over use of alcohol glorification at event which was supposed to honor wounded warriors
Next earlier Carol Perkins column, Commentary/History -: Friday night lights! Posted August 18, 2013.

By Carol Perkins

Learning something new invigorates me; makes me feel alive. I learned something new from Toby Keith. Yes, from Toby Keith. I'm not sure I learned anything that will either invigorate me or make me feel alive, and I might have been better off not knowing. I will never look at a red Solo cup and feel the same.

The Butterfly Album - mid-late August, 2013

Click on headline for introductory comments and all photo(s)
ColumbiaMagazine.com nature album

Tommy Bailey discovered that butterflies are in abundance at this time of the year. Yesterday, Sunday, August 18, 2013, he sent some stunning pictures of flowers which attract butterflies, including Sue Dowell's Butterfly Bush in the Young Additiion of Columbia, and from a zinnia garden. Zinnias are magnets for the beautiful creatures, he said.

We don't have a photo, but Fay McKinley has a butterfly bush in her backyard, and says that he needs only periodic maintenance - trimming back every few years - to keep it full of blooms and full of butterflies.

For those enjoying Adair County byways, flowers and butterflies are everywhere. A few of those are included in this album.

As always, we like to have plant and butterfly species identified, and when they are posted without more information, comments from those with knowledge is always appreciate. - EW

Poetry by Robert Stone: Sticky notes, a villanelle

Sticky notes
-a villanelle for Lisa Comperry
Life change events are sticky notes inside,
the highs, the lows, the sweets, the sours, snide stings,
reminders that both gain and loss abide.

Uncertainties test those who seek to guide
dependent babe and child with untried wings.
Life change events are sticky notes inside.

Desire for conquest joins with heedless pride,
blind love and hot ambition provide flings,
reminders that both gain and loss abide.

Accomplishments make light of what denied,
prosperity and wisdom implied sings.
Life change events are sticky notes inside.

Declining strength and less demanding stride,
diminish forceful will that defied kings,
reminders that both gain and loss abide.

More waning and less waxing, letting slide,
will loosen soul from flesh that untied clings.
Life change events are sticky notes inside,
reminders that both gain and loss abide.
