Charles Lee Cowherd, Taylor County, KY (1920-2013)

He was a native of Taylor County, KY and a resident at the time of his death. His marriage to Audrey Reynolds Cowherd who survives, had spanned 68 years. He was patriarch of a large, highly regarded South Central Kentucky family centered on Taylor, Adair and Green Counties. He was the father of Cora Renfro of Adair County. He leaves 17 direct living descendants spanning three generations. He professed faith in Christ and was a member of Early's Chapel United Methodist Church. He was carpenter and a farmer

Charles Lee Cowherd of Campbellsville, son of the late William Turner Cowherd and Sallie Matt Gaddie Cowherd, was born February 8, 1920 in Taylor County, Kentucky. He died at 5:28 A.M., Tuesday, August 13, 2013 in Elizabethtown. Age: 93

The funeral service will be at 12pm noon CT/1pmET, Thursday, August 15, 2013 at the Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home, 418 Lebanon Avenue, Campbellsville, KY, by Rev. Jeff Newton. Burial will be in Campbellsville Memorial Gardens, 3878 Greensburg Road, Campbellsville, KY. Visitation will be 4pm-7pmCT/5pm-8pmET, at the funeral home.

KY Governor's School for Arts to move to Centre Campus

2014 Move from Lexington to Danville will bring prestigious summer arts residency program for rising Kentucky High School sophomores and juniors to less than 60 miles away from Columbia

LOUISVILLE, KY (August 13, 2013) - The Kentucky Center Governor's School for the Arts (GSA), an annual intensive summer arts residency program for Kentucky high school sophomores and juniors, has announced that it will relocate to Centre College in summer 2014. The program has resided at Transylvania University for the previous fourteen years. After recently completing a request for proposals for a host campus for 2014-2017, the arts education program selected the Danville-based college to serve as the new campus. The Governor's School for the Arts is a statewide arts education program managed by the Kentucky Center.

Bob Valvano was the Keynote speaker at the Adair County School System's opening day activities he entertained both the certified and classified staff with wonderful real life examples of how laughter, thinking, and emotion are the key to living and how coming together as a community enables us to get through any adversity or change.

His program was well received and appropriate with all the new changes in the Adair County School System.

Mr. Valvano is a well known college basketball analyst on ESPN TV and Radio as well as a game analyst for the University of Louisville Basketball TV and Radio. His life experiences not only include extensive media positions but, he has coached at all three NCAA levels for over 21 years which included teaching, and 16 years of experience in Europe as Head Coach.

School opens: Take extra precautions in commutes tomorrow

Columbia Police Department would like to remind everyone to take extra precaution in their morning and afternoon commutes as Adair County Schools gets underway Wednesday morning, August 14, 2013.

There will be a few adjustments in traffic flow around the campus with the opening of the new school so we ask each and every driver to be patient, courteous, and mindful of other drivers.

Columbia Police will be monitoring traffic in the school zones and around the campus. We would also like to wish a successful start to all the students, faculty, and staff of Adair County Schools.

Evelyn Rowe, Russell County, KY (1920-2013)

She made history as the first woman ever elected to the Russell Springs, KY, City Council. She was a native of McCreary County, KY, a remember of a extraordinarily distinguished family, and a resident of Jamestown, Russell County, KY, at the time of her death. She was a sister of former Columbia Mayor Pat Bell. She leaves two direct living descendants. She was a former bookkeeper for Grider Insurance, and an employee of Russell County Clerks office. She was a member of the New Victory Baptist Church.

Evelyn Lucille Rowe, 93, of Jamestown, KY, died Monday, August 12, 2013 at the Fair Oaks Nursing Home in Jamestown, KY.

A private graveside service will be held Thursday, August 15, 2013 at the Russell Springs City Cemetery with Bro. Rick Neff officiating.

Lightning fire causes minor damage to Taylor Co. doublewide

Fire late Monday evening controlled by residents and Campbellsville-Taylor County Firefighters.

LOCATION: Fire Scene off Blue Hole Road near Green River Lake about 4.5 miles, 10 minutes S of Campbellsville-Taylro County Fire Station (100 W. Broadway) according to Google Map

Campbellsville-Taylor County Firefighters were dispatched at 10:04pmET, Monday, May 13, 2013, to a reported structure fire due to a lightning strike. A double-wide trailer at 209 Reflection Way, Campbellsville, KY, owned and occupied by Rhonda Christie suffered minor damage to the exterior siding as a result of the fire. Occupants of the residence were able to control the fire before firefighters arrived. No injuries resulted from the incident. Three units of apparatus and 15 CTC Fire Department were on the scene, assisted by CTC EMS. - Campbellsville 911

Beginning of School - Opening Notes from Supt. Reed

Bus Schedules about same as last year, but arrival times at school may be slightly delayed because of road construction

I would like to remind all parents and students that while bus pickup times will be about the same in the morning, buses could run a little later due to road construction. Drop off times will continue to be at 7amCT for parent convenience at all schools, with starting times at 7:45amCT and school ending times at 2:45pmCT More details are forthcoming on early release Friday's which start in September.

We had a huge turnout for Open House at Adair County Middle School and at Adair County Elementary school last evening. The Freshman Orientation at Adair County High School was also well attended.

COLUMBIA, KY - An incoming Lindsey Wilson College freshman will start her college career with extra financial help, thanks to DuoCounty Telecom.

Nancy George of Russell Springs, KY, has been named a 2013-14 DuoCounty Telecom Scholar at the liberal arts college. George will receive a $3,000 scholarship from the telecom cooperative, which serves Adair, Cumberland and Russell counties.

Lebanon, KY, man shot while sitting on front porch

Police are seeking a black male approximately 5'7" tall. KSP report says he was wearing a gray hoodie when he came onto porch and shot 45-year-old Mark Mattingly before fleeing

LEBANON, KY - Detective B.J. Burton is investigating a shooting that occurred Monday, August 13, 2013, at approximately 7:40pmET. 45-year-old Mark Mattingly, of Lebanon, KY was sitting on his front porch at his residence at 337 East Martin Boulevard, when an unknown black male came onto the porch and shot him several times before fleeing the area.

The black male was described as being approximately 5'7" tall and was wearing a gray hoodie. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Kentucky State Police at 1-800-222-5555 or by text-a-tip at 67283. Mattingly is in stable condition at Springview Hospital, Lebanon, KY.

First District Magistrate Harold Burton was in Columbia yesterday afternoon, Monday, August 12, 2013, and gave reported that the fish fry at his church, Bloomington Chapel Brethren in Christ, resulted in a net of over $6,500 to pay on the church's building fund, which is being rapidly amortized. The final tally was right at what Daryl Kemp, owner of Hot Prints on Jamestown Road in Columbia and a member there, had earlier project.

The Fish Fry was held Saturday, August 3, 2013, and faced threatening weather and competition from the US 127 Yard Sales.

Boys Golf: Riley Grant ties for third place at Rebel Challenge

The ACHS boys varsity golf team competed in the Rebel Challenge in Danville, Kentucky at the Old Bridge Golf Club, 1 Old Bridge Road, Danville, KY, on Saturday August 10, 2013. Riley Grant let the way with an impressive 71, one under par which tied him for third place overall. Daniel Rarey was next with an 82 followed by Blake Maupins 85. Austin Cundiff and Tanner Garmon finished out the team with an 88 and 92 respectively. The team total was a 326 which put the Indians in ninth place for the tournament out of 16 teams. St. Xavier won the tournament with a team total of 291.
