Story in progress. Please check back

By Ed Waggener

First District Magistrate Harold Burton was in Columbia yesterday afternoon, Monday, August 12, 2013, and gave reported that the fish fry at his church, Bloomington Chapel Brethren in Christ, resulted in a net of over $6,500 to pay on the church's building fund, which is being rapidly amortized. The final tally was right at what Daryl Kemp, owner of Hot Prints on Jamestown Road in Columbia and a member there, had earlier project.

The Fish Fry was held Saturday, August 3, 2013, and faced threatening weather and competition from the US 127 Yard Sales.

Scenic Adair Co., KY: Pasture on Bloomington Church Road

2013-08-04 - Big One District, Adair County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Magistrate Harold Burton - who serves District One on the Adair County Fiscal Court, is a one-man Tourism Commission, Board of Trade, and promoter for the scenic area of Northeast Adair County. He insisted that my favorite mother-in-law and I drive the mile or so out past his church, Bloomington Chapel, to take in the scenery on the dead end road. It's stunning countryside. And so peaceful. So natural. This scene was one Mrs. Marcum really liked. It reminded her of the Metcalfe woman who received a message from her son in France who said that when he got home, he was going to raise Charolais cattle. When the mother wrote to him, she told him she missed him and to be safe, and added, "I don't don't know anything about any Charlie's cows, but good luck with them when you get home." The cows appear to be leading very happy lives - far happier than the pitiful look on animals in feed lots - and the housekeeping would make anyone happy to be their neighbors. The visit - my first there in over the alloted three score and ten - gave me a Little Prince feeling. He had never gotten tired of the fabulous sunsets on his planet. I never tire of seeing a new vista in Adair County. Made me thankful for people like Harold Burton who appreciate what a special place this is. - Ed Waggener

2013-08-13 - 55 Bloomington Church Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.

The Saturday, August 3, 2013 Bloomington Chapel Fish Fry & Auction was a success, Harold Burton, second from left, said. He posed with, from left, James Ray Hammond, (Burton), Mirih Murphy and Mirih's father Marion Murphy. the Murphys are members and James Ray Hammond attends many functions there. Mirih is a top student, an avid reader, and plans to be a doctor. She already knows all the bones in the body, and can recite them on request; which she did. The seven-year old's million dollar smile seems perpetually on. Dad is so rightfully proud of her. - Ed Waggener

Fellowship Hall at Bloomington Chapel

2013-08-13 - 55 Bloomington Church Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Throughout the time of the meal, the spacious Fellowship Hall at Bloomington Chapel Brethren in Christ Church was busy. Some intent on eating, others, such as Marion Murphy, Front, centerand Marshall Irvin, just took time to check up on things. That's Wes irvin, in the green shirt in back, right; Shirley Moss, standing behind Mr. Murphy, and James Ray Hammond standing behind Mr. Marshall Irvin. On the table in the back of the room were items to be auctioned, later, for a major contribution to the funds which will be used to retire the debt on the congregation's new building in which the fellowship hall is located.
