The Parrishes win top prize in 2013 AC Fair Give-Away

Janet, Perry, and Rachel Parrish of Columbia, KY, were the grand prize winners in the 2013 Adair County Fair Give-Away, taking home a check for $5,000, sold to them by Holly Loy.

Brian Robertson won the $3,000 prize, which he bout from Billy Rowe. He was accompanied by his daughter Shelby, to the presentation.

Third place prize, $2,000, was won by James Davidson, Columbia, KY. He bought the winning ticket from Jennifer Carter, Columbia, KY.

Marc Evans, chairman of the Give-Away, presented the checks on Saturday night, July 13, 2013, at the last event of the fair. - Greg Thomas

Age 6-12 year old category: First place - Brianna Stapleton from Columbia, KY; Second Place - Emma Grider from Columbia, KY; and Third Place - Breydon Helm from Russell Springs, KY.
13- 21 year old category: First Place - Patsy & Katie Bowles from Elizabethtown, KY; Second Place - Ann-Courtney Thompson from Lebanon, KY; and Third Place - Brandi Powell from Columbia, KY.
22 and up Category: First Place - Dorsey Franklin, Mary McGowan, Lucille Franklin, Patti Issacs and Barb Harford from Somerset. Second Place - Kristi Brady from Campbellsville, and Third place - Jan L. Patterson from Burkesville, KY.

Columbia Police arrest 2 Taylor Countians after traffic stop

One had outstanding Warrant of Arrest from Taylor County

Columbia Police Department arrest two Taylor County residents on drug charges in the limits of Columbia on Sunday, July 14, 2013, at approximately 5:49pmCT.

The arrest came after CPD Ofc. Drew Conn observed a 1996 Plymouth Breeze, travelling North on Greensburg Street, commit multiple driving violations and initiated a traffic stop. During the stop it was found that at least one of three occupants had a outstanding Warrant of Arrest from Taylor county. Further investigation led CPD officers to conduct a search of vehicle were suspected cocaine, pills, drug paraphernalia, and scales were located. Arrested were:
  • Velvet M Smith, 31, of Taylor County - Trafficking in a Controlled Substance 1st Degree Cocaine, 2 outstanding Warrants of Arrest, 1 from Taylor County Circuit Court for Fraudulent use of a ID, and a Parole Violation Warrant from the KY Parole Board.
  • April Smith, 33, of Taylor County - Trafficking in a Controlled Substance 1st Degree Cocaine, Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd degree, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

LIBERTY, KY - Trooper Adam Likins is investigating a single vehicle fatal collision that occurred Sunday night, July 14, 2013 1 mile south of Liberty on US 127 at 11:32pmET.

James L. Baugh, age 37 of Liberty was traveling north in a 2004 Saturn when he lost control of the vehicle, overcorrected, and overturned.

Happy Tail: The Kindness of Strangers

This past week was an amazing one for Sugarfoot Farm Rescue for donations. Donations helped pay off a vet bill of $700, and gifts from Sandy Pyles, Cindi Waggener, Jolene Wuertenberg. and Miss Donna Rieder brought a lot of happiness to the dogs at Sugar Foot Rescue.

In April I received a call about a dog who had shown up at someone's back door. He told me the dog had a cable embedded into its leg. He said he cut the cable off but the wound was very deep and he was unable to care for the dog. I went to his home and found the sweetest, elderly yellow dog. She had the kindest eyes and you could tell she was in pain.

National Weather Service warns of prolonged heat wave

Hot and Humid Conditions will prevail today - NWS

At 3:06amCT/4:06amET, the National Weather Service in Louisville, KY issued a warning:
"The first prolonged heat wave of the summer is set to occur over Central Kentucky and Southern Indiana this week, with high pressure keeping skies mostly clear...Temperatures across the region will top out in the lower to mid-90's during the work week. High Humidity will combine with these temperatures to creat heat indices between 100 and 105 degrees in many locations. The high humidity will also present temperatures from dipping below 70 for morning lows. Anyone who must spend extended periods of time outdoors this week should prepare for the heat by dressing in light colored, light weight clothing and take frequent water breaks."
The area affected includes the CM area counties of Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor Counties.
