JDGEE: The monsterously large paw paw tree of Cane Valley My late pater nobilis never lied, but he could stretch the blanket with the best of them. I recall him talking about when he was a young man finding a tree in the eastern part of Russell County so big he started walking around it the 12th of August and didn't get back to the starting point until two days before the autumnal equinox. That specimen, however, couldn't hold a candle to the monstrously large paw paw tree mentioned in the Cane Valley newsletter in the June 5, 1912 edition of the Adair County News (transcribed verbatim): "W.E. Hancock, Esq., has a paw paw bush in his yard two inches in diameter at the ground and twenty-four high. Letter: Old Coddger recollects big tree A suggested answer to question which stumped Junior Stotts Old Coddger writes: Ed, I saw this picture many years ago and it was made in Cane Valley. It was the stump of a Pawpaw tree. There was also a picture of the team of mules that was hauling one 20' log from this tree, and it took a 12 mule hitch to handle the load.
