It was a perfect evening at Lindsey Wilson College's Roberta C. Cranmer Dining Center, for the Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce annual awards banquet, with excellent food, great entertainment with Down Memory Lane, and a moving awards banquet which, for at least one recipient, saw everyone on their feet giving a standing ovation with not a dry eye in the crowd.The Awards Winners were:

Tommy Giles, Adair County, KY (1939-2012)

He was one of Columbia's most respected Christian gentlemen and was a beloved and valued citizen. He was a member of a large, distinguished Adair County family. He was a faithful member of the Columbia Christian Church, where he had served as a Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent, was a member of Columbia Lodge 96, a member of the Taylor County RECC Board of Directors, a former Columbia City Councilman and was a founding member of the Adair County Rescue Squad

SOMERSET, KY (April 17, 2012) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is gearing up for roadside mowing season, which stretches from May to October. Three Adair County players on 2012 State AAU Champions

Three Adair County athletes competed in the 2012 7th grade AAU State Tournament this past weekend at the Kentucky Basketball Academy in Lexington. They are part of the Kentucky Elite team coached by Greg Lundy. In pool play on Saturday, April 14, 2012, the team defeated Rob D's Elite by a score of 71-59 and Kentucky Storm by 74-52.

On Sunday, tournament play began with a victory over Matt's Mustangs. In the championship game, the team took on team FOCUS defeating them 74-61. This is the 5th State Championship for Kel Stotts and Chance Melton and the 3rd State Championship for Corey Melton. -Amy Melton

The ACHS Beta Club and National Honor Society annual Earth Day Celebration will be held at the at the Arboretum, (on Indian Drive next to the ACHS Tennis Courts at 487 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY, 9:30am-1:45pmCT, Thursday, April 19, 2012, and 9:15am-11amCT, Friday, April 20, 2012, if the weather cooperates.

The ACHS BETA and National Honor Society students are sponsoring their annual Earth Day Celebration for preschool thru 2nd grade.CWC and ACES are classes are participating with around 650 students celebrating Earth Day with engaging and educational activities.

After the short hike over to the Indian Pride Arboretum they will build a city from recyclables, practice their bird identification skills with binoculars, play yard games, identify trees in the scavenger hunt, have their faces painted, dance a jig, listen to and discuss the The Lorax, learn about energy use and finally stroll back to their schools.

Also, this year Mrs. Heather Spoon and her Energy Technology Career Academy (ECTA) energy students will be working a station at the event. - Sheila Willis

Campbellsville U's concert chorus to present 'Seven Last Words'

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - Campbellsville University's School of Music will present the university's concert chorus in a performance of the cantata, "The Seven last Words of Christ," by French composer Theodore DuBubois. The event will take place Monday, April 30, 2012, at 8pmET/7pmCT, in CU's Ransdell Chapel at 401 N. Hoskins Avenue, Campbellsville, KY.

Dr. David Hedrick, assistant professor of music at CU, will be directing the chorus as CU's orchestra accompanies them with student soloists. Other compositions of the program include "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" by J. S. Bach, "In Paradisum" from Requiem by Gabriel Faure'; conducted by graduate conducting student Jeffrey Stone and "Sanctus" from St. Cecilia Mass by Charles Gounod with tenor soloist Jian Jia Wang.

The program is free and the public is invited to attend.

JIM: Mr. C.G. Jeffries and the election of 1921

Something happened in Adair County in 1921 which has rarely - if ever happened in Adair County politics; probably only JIM or his cousin Mike would know - happened. A successful independent candidacy.

In the summer of 1921, C.G. "Gus" Jeffries, then in his 44th year, announced his candidacy as an Independent for Judge of the Adair County Court. In the announcement, published in the August 23rd News and addressed "To the voters of Adair County both White and Black," Mr. Jeffries noted that he had three times before served the people of Adair County: as a Justice of the Peace (first district), later as a deputy County Court Clerk under Walker Bryant, and then as Jailer of Adair County.

Hi Ed, I remember when I first started to work for the state as a social worker climbing up stairs in the old jail to visit the mother of a child I was working with. The space she had was so small and one could not stand up. That memory has stayed with me all these years. That was over 50 years ago. It was like she was a caged animal. "Gus" Jefffries in an article today including mention of his tenure as Adair County Jailer, and Jim revived the memory of this wonderful Adair Countian in another piece about the Tandy Hotel. If my memory is right, Mr. Jeffries' last office was Police or City Judge in Columbia, KY.

Joe Finis Crawhorn, Adair Co., KY (1946-2012)

He was a resident of Berwyn, IL at the time of his death and services will be held in Chicago, IL, (Details of service not yet received). He was the son of the late Finis Joseph and Lilyvene Franklin Crawhorn and a member of a large respected Adair County, KY, family, with many relatives in the South Central Kentucky area as well as in Illinois, He was a security guard and loved to bowl.

Joe Finis Crawhorn age 65 of Berwyn, Illinois formerly of Adair County, KY passed away Sunday, April 15, 2012 at his home in Berwyn after an illness.

"New" jail of 1857 built during Jailer McFarland Canterberry term. Jailers there were Canterberry, William T. Smith, John W. McClain, William O. Murrell, John W. McClain, again; John H. Reynolds, George Milton Wolford, and Robert M. Tucker. Jailers at the 1894-1985 jail were Samuel H. Mitchell, James K. Polk Conover, A.W. Tarter, C.G. "Gus" Jeffries, A.W. Tarter, F.W. Miller, Evan Akin, Curt Stephens, Mrs. Pearl Stephens, E.B. Morgan, Amos Coomer, Noah Flatt, Curtis Powell, Osby Rowe, Lucien Kimbler, Mrs. Mary Kimbler, Hailey Neagle, and Lawrence W. Burton.

The "New" Adair County Jail, 1857

McFarland Canterberry became Adair County jailer in 1854, making bond for the office in September, and serving until January 1862. During his tenure the "new" jail was constructed. The "1857 jail," the county's third, was built on the corner of High and Greensburg Streets, the same building now housing Stotts, Phelps McQueary Funeral Home.
