Below the horizon of the past

Peter Stanford, vacationing in Rome, borrowed a friend's apartment facing a small square near the church of Saint Clement. He became intrigued by a shrine about the size of a guard booth across the way. With a faded fresco of a Madonna and child, this edicola had the air of an unkempt country cemetery "once loved and tended but today forgotten by all but a handful of devoted souls."

Poetry by Robert Stone: A possible new right, a sonnet

A possible new right
-a sonnet reflecting on a drawing's inscription: Patience is a virtue
Today my yesterdays will not keep still.
I thought I knew the meaning of the words
I read, repeated, gladly took as drill
to shape a life this mortal body girds.

Tomorrow by today is forecast same.
I think I will continue wondering
if blessing, cursing, righteousness, or blame
results when I some thoughtless blunder bring.

All yesterdays tomorrows underwrite.
I cannot put unwanted past aside
but having seen a possible new right
can choose another way at path's divide.

My patience both short shrinks and long expands.
and that of others vexes my demands.

- Robert Stone, 15 April 2012

Is an article, ad, or photo you sent not yet posted?

Could be something minor is needed, and you didn't include a phone number or email so we could contact you. When this happens it makes us very sad. We've offended somebody out there and there's little we can do about it.

Talking on the phone for us ranks right down there with atonal music, long-windedness in speakers, and right of way spraying as among our least favorite things in the world, but it's the quickest way to handle the situation: Give a call, at 270-250-2730 and we'll do the best to make it work. -CM

JIM: 100 years ago, April 17, 1912 with Spicy Bits

Prefatory Statement by the Author: This column reminds me of what an old fellow over near Sycamore Flats in Russell County said about his barn: Well, hit coulda been bettered a right smart, but by the time hit was done, I was finished.' -JIM
Prefatory statement from CM: Folks, don't let this aw shucks modesty fool you, it's the same faux modesty Mayor Harris uses when he says he's no speaker and then delivers a Gettysburg Address - with banjo music and and a dozen quotable one-liners. We're on to both of them. This is, in fact, one of JIM's best colyums - one of the best pieces he's ever written for this paper. Has everything, even another Mary Ritchey (Other'n the real one: Mary Ritchey Lowe Bennett). -EW

Chuck Hinman, IJMA No. 170: The Rest of the story

When life imposed impaired vision, Chuck Hinman took stock of what sight he had and concluded: Thank God for the vision I have. I have a suspicion it's going to be enough when I quit acting like a baby and enjoy what I have. It's pretty "dog-goned good"!

The Rest of the Story

The last time I rattled the keys on this computer I was describing what it's like to lose your central vision and all the things that went down the drain in that experience. It's pretty heavy reading.

Why Street and Number for Events? It works for everybody.

Saves time for everybody. Saves publicity costs.

As a courtesy to our readers, ColumbiaMagazine.com only posts Events and stories about events when the venue location includes Street and Number. Why? It's the universal way to find a location. It works. It saves time. It's saves energy. It's a life saving tool. It saves, most of all, tax payer and institutional money.

Most importantly, it gives the organization the slight edge which makes all the difference. Bigger crowds. And far less cost. Thanks, CM contributors, for always remembering to use Street and Number in Events and stories about Events. Generally, inclusion of the Street and Number includes a huge payoff in dollars: It can be the difference between a PAID and a FREE notice.

Items without Street & Number are welcome and posted as PAID advertising., but at our regular advertising rates: A five part posting for a club event: $60 up without street and number. And that's a bargain. Yard Sales for individuals are free in the 7-County CM area if they include Street and Number for venue, and only $9 if they use old fashioned methods. Still a bargain. -CM

Wild Turkey album with 3 great stories from the 2012 hunt

There are three great 2012 Wild Turkey Hunt photos and short items this morning. The photos are all attached to this article.
  • John Luke Partin was hunting with his Dad John Ray Partin early Saturday morning, April 14, 2012, on the home farm at Bliss, KY when he took this nice Eastern Wild Turkey. The Gobbler had a 9 inch beard 1.5 inch spurs and weighed 22 pounds and 12 ounces. The big bird fell prey to his Dad's calling using a Cane Creek Call made in Kentucky and purchased locally at Day and Day Feed and Pet. - Terry Partin

  • Hayden Bennett had two good reasons to be excited, and that probably explains why he barely slept a wink Friday night! Saturday morning, April 14, 2012 was his first turkey hunting adventure with his Pa, Jimmy Stone; and he also had a visit from the tooth fairy last night! The attached picture is of Hayden, minus his front tooth, his Pa, and the 20 pound turkey that Hayden called in. The turkey once resided in the Clay Ridge community of Adair County. Both Hayden and his Pa live in Columbia. Hayden's parents are Scott and LeAnna Bennett and he has a very proud little sister, Addie Bennett. Pa is married to one of the most important people in the entire equation -Granny (Phyllis Stone). Granny will be in charge of cooking the spoils of the hunt for all to enjoy! - Melissa Stone

  • And veteran master hunter Daril Salyers took a 25 lb., 10 1/2 inch beard, 1 1/4 inch spurs turkey on opening morning in Gradyville, KY. Frances Salyers
The photos were all posted first thing this morning. We'll be posting more, as received, first thing each morning. Send your photo using any Contact/Submit button.
