We'll submit that question to JIM, although he is very careful to transcribe word for word, neither taking from nor adding to, just as it is handed down unto him. Either way, 60 gallons of anything is a lot. - EW

Thanks, Mary. Of course you're right. I didn't mean to imply that she did do all those things. The operative word was supposed to be "could." - if she were so minded. -EW.

JIM Gem: Top this, June Cleaver

By JIM

This appeared in the April 9, 1902 News. June Cleaver couldn't hold a candle to Mrs. Coffey!

Mrs. J.N. Coffey, of this city, is not only an estimable and highly cultured lady, but she is willing to do "what her hands find to do." One day last week she turned her attention to making soap, a necessary article in all well-regulated families, and in a few hours she had canned sixty gallons. This done, she went into her parlor, played and sang a few of the masterpieces of music, and by the noon hour there was a well-cooked dinner for her husband, who arrived from his place of business. Mrs. Coffey's accomplishments are due to her early training.

Jim, Thanks.

Wonderful magnum opus on Meadow Hill Inn coming up: by JIM

Memories of a Very Special Place by an Extraordinary Writer.

It couldn't come at a more fitting time: A great article on the Meadow Hill Inn, one of the all time great restaurants in Columbia, KY, history.

We have the story in hand, it's written by JIM, as only he could do it. What's makes it so apt for today is that Meadow Hill Inn was one of those post World War II advances which came, much as today, much as in the early 1900's, at a time when the mood was upbeat, when Adair Countians could see nothing but progress ahead, just as it is today.

We're announcing it early hoping that readers will watch for the story and then will send photo(s), stories, memories about Meadow Hill Inn to us as well. The photo(s), especially, are needed now. -CM

Ed, Is there still a Freecycling posts on Columbia Magazine? If so I am looking for a fridge for my garage. It does not have to be fancy, it's just going to hold water and Ski and worms. If anyone out there has a running fridge to give away, please feel free to call me at 270-378-1071 or drop me an email at clayandbeverly@gmail.com. Thanks Ed, - Clay Jones
Thanks, Clay Jones. Yes, we still have a Freecycling classification, but things leave there so fast we often don't have any - just one at this writing. Most of the time, it's hours. But we put wants in Want to Buy -with a note. when someone is looking for something for no money, just hauling it away - which is really something of a purchase since the giver is getting a cartage fee waived, isn't she/he. -EW
