She spots that good Smiley School strength in quilting circle

Virginia Kimbler Burkett writes:
Ladies of Millerfield Brethren in Christ Church: Wish I lived closer. I would help. I learned how to tact and quilt at an early age from my mother, Mary Etta Kimbler. This is another wonderful example of good people from Hwy 206 and surrounding communities.

Is the Roberts lady one of Clestine's sisters in law? Is Glenna Bailey Dewey's wife? Remember some of ladies (children then as was I) from Smiley School.

Such good memories! What a wonderful way to give to those in need. - Jenny Kimbler Burkett

Adair FFA officer team promotes Farm tag donation program

Click on headline for item with photo

By Karli Jessie, President
Adair County High School FFA President

The Adair County FFA Chapter is promoting the Farm tag donation program during the month of March. When a person renews or purchases a farm license plate, they can add a voluntary $10 donation to be divided equally among Kentucky 4-H, Kentucky FFA, and Kentucky Proud.

Donations are used to fund several different programs and awards that are beneficial to students in our local 4-H and FFA chapters. When a farmer donates $10, it helps more students participate in constructive activities and help to gain more agriculture opportunities. We need the community's support to help further Kentucky's youth and Kentucky agriculture. -Karli Jessie

A pair of four-run innings propelled the Lindsey Wilson College baseball team to a 10-4 win over visiting Indiana University Southeast Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at Egnew Park (at Lindsey Wilson Sports Park, 820 Hanley Drive, Columbia, KY). Jeff Kerian, Jeff Murphy and Lance Harrington each contributed two hits to help the Blue Raiders out-hit the visitors 10-5. Kerian scored the Blue Raiders' first run in the bottom of the second to give Lindsey Wilson (11-6) the early 1-0 lead. He opened the inning with a single to right field and later scored on a wild pitch to push the Blue Raiders out in front. IU Southeast (5-7) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth as Tyler Woolums provided a two-out single to plate Frank Pluskota -- who led off the inning with a single.

Kerian responded for the Blue Raiders with a two-out homer in the bottom of the fourth to give Lindsey Wilson a 2-1 lead. The homer was the first of nine straight runs for the Blue Raiders.

Lindsey Wilson duplicated the four runs one inning later despite just one hit in the inning. The Blue Raiders scored on a bases loaded walk, a wild pitch, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly during the inning to extend their lead to 10-1. The Grenadiers scored twice in the seventh and once in the eighth to trim the lead to 10-4.

Lindsey Wilson's Rob Kurtz picked up the win in relief of starter Daniel Pulliam. Kurtz did not allow a run over his 2-1/3 innings while allowing just two hits. Pulliam allowed one run on two hits in 3-2/3 innings.

JIM: Basketball tournaments bring memory of great teams past

Remember this great Lindsey Wilson Team?: Misses Zora Edna Bell and Gladys Fraser, forwards; Misses Vivian Long and Iva Lewis, guards; Miss Ethel Garnett, center; and Misses Ruth Hill and Bessie Stockton. Or this powerhouse Columbia High School Redhounds outfit: Allen Mercer, Earl Blair, Morris Epperson, Marvin Sinclair, and Frank Callison. They made Adair County basketball history 90 years ago. It's all right here, in Jim's account. He ought to have been a sports writer

By JIM

With basketball tournaments in full swing, a look back at three games of yore as reported in the News ninety years ago today -- March 7, 1922 -- seems in order.
