Tri-County Car Club is awarding $500 scholarship

Second year in a row club has offered award, won last year by Nicholas Courtwright, Lebanon, KY, a Marion County High School graduate, now in Speed School studying engineering

For the second year in a row, the Tri-County Car Club is awarding a $500 scholarship to a student pursuing an auto-related career.

The scholarship will be awarded in May by the club based in Campbellsville which has members from several counties.

The Tri-Counties Auto Club Scholarship award, was won last year by Nicholas Courtwright, Lebanon, KY, a Marion County High School graduate, now in Speed School studying engineering at the University of Louisville, KY, studying engineering. He's shown above with his car, a VW bug he rebuilt. Tri-County Auto Club, for the second year in a row, is taking applications for another $500 scholarship to a student in an auto-related career. The scholarship will be awarded in May of this year.

According to 2010 US Census data, the percentage of those holding at least a bachelors degree in the following counties is:
  • Taylor - 14.9%
  • Adair - 14.4%
  • Russell - 12.7%
  • Green - 11.4%
  • Casey - 9.5%
  • Cumberland - 7.9%
  • Metcalfe - 7.2%

Director of local bank receives nomination from President Obama

President nominates Pete Mahurin to serve as a member of the Tennessee Valley Authority Board of Directors. He is chairman of Albany Bancorp, owner of First and Farmers National Bank which has locations in Adair, Cumberland, Clinton, and Pulaski Counties. The Mahurin family supports Lindsey Wilson College and Governors Scholars of Kentucky

Mr. Peter "Pete" Mahurin, Chairman of Hilliard Lyons Financial Services, was nominated to serve as Member of the Tennessee Valley Authority Board of Directors by President Barack Obama. Mr. Mahurin has served Hilliard Lyons in different capacities since 1968. He earned a B.A. in Chemistry from Western Kentucky University, and worked as a high school math and science teacher before beginning his career with Hilliard Lyons.

Asks motorists to be careful while MWCCC Road Race in town

Gary Rose writes:

I want to remind your readers that this weekend Lindsey Wilson College Cycling will be hosting the MWCCC Road Race.

On Saturday the road races will be held in two different parts of the county. Sundays race will be held at the ACHS. There 300+ cyclists expected to be on the roads of Adair County during these races.
I encourage the motorist to be extra cautious when traveling the roads where the races are being held. -Gary Rose

Robert Leon James, Casey Co., KY (1949-2012)

He was a member of a large, highly regarded family. He leaves 41 direct living descendants. He was a retired truck driver, an avid drag racing fan, and antiques collector and attended Walnut Hill Separate Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War and will be accorded military honors by the Casey County Funeral Squad and the Ft. Knox Honor Guard.

Alice Hyojung Kim teaches Casey kids about Korean culture

Alice Hyojung Kim, a Lindsey Wilson College foreign exchange student from Inchon, South Korea, came to Colonel William Casey Elementary School to Angie Hixson's class to talk to her class and Kelly Robertson's 2nd grade classrooms on Friday, February 17, 2012.

Miss Rebecca Routt is a student teacher in Mrs. Angie's class and she is doing a unit on diversity and Alice came to talk with the students about her culture. In the picture is Alice showing a favorite food of Koreans to Hannah, Anita, Dameon, and Hailey.

ACHS Lady Indians In District Finals - Wear Blue in Support

The ACHS Lady Indians will take on Marion County tonight, February 24, 2012, at 6:30pm CT in the finals of the 20th District Tournament at Taylor County High School, 300 Ingram Avenue, Campbellsville, KY 42718. The Lady Indians defeated Taylor County in the opening game of the District Tournament with a score of 67 to 50.

Gov. Beshear issues statement on gaming amendment

FRANKFORT, KY - "Obviously, I am disappointed that several of the Senators who had publicly said they would support letting the people decide did not follow through on their commitment to our citizens.

I am also disappointed that Sen. Williams chose to sabotage the chance for our citizens to decide by scheduling the vote for today, when he knew that a Senator who planned to vote "yes" would not be in town.

Another plea to find Gilbert, the missing miniature Schnauzer

My sister lost a dog from the East 80 Summer Hill Drive area. He is a black miniature Schnauzer who answers to the name of Gilbert. She loves him very much and is extremely upset. I think she may have already sent a picture of him, but if not, I'll be glad to send one. Her number is 270-250-4010. Could you please post this? Bachelor's degree attainment tops 30% for 1st time, nationally

If anyone knows the percentages of Bachelor's degrees for Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor Counties, of Kentucky, could you share it with us?

Report from U.S. Census

In March 2011, for the first time ever, more than 30 percent of U.S. adults 25 and older had at least a bachelor's degree, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today. As recently as 1998, fewer than one-quarter of people this age had this level of education.

Lindsey Wilson to honor 1971-72 Championship Basketball Team

COLUMBIA, KY. - This Saturday, the Lindsey Wilson College community will recognize one of the school's greatest men's basketball programs this Saturday night.

The 1971-72 LWC men's basketball team won the National Little College Athletic Association championship. It was the first national championship won by an LWC sports team.

ACHS Lady Indians In District Finals - Pep Club urges: Wear Blue in Support
The ACHS Lady Indians will take on Marion County tonight, February 24, 2012, at 6:30pm CT in the finals of the 20th District Tournament at Taylor County High School, 300 Ingram Avenue, Campbellsville, KY 42718. The Lady Indians defeated Taylor County in the opening game of the District Tournament with a score of 67 to 50.
