Billy Joe Fudge sizes up Greetings from Columbia, KY postcard

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
According to my size-up of the post card I've found that:
  • The guard rail is on the wrong side of the road to protect motorists from running into the water or hitting a tree,
  • The sunlight on the water would indicate that the sun would be low in the sky up and almost in front of our viewpoint.
  • The sunlight on the forked tree would indicate that the sun is behind our viewpoint.
  • The sunlight on the two tall, twin trees would indicate that the sun was low in the sky to the right.
  • Regardless of how tall or short the trees are the shadows are pretty much the same length which would indicate that the sun was pretty much overhead.
  • None of the shadows reach all the way across the road. Billy Joe Fudge-

Mike Watson: One scene fits all places - way to hawk postcards

Mike Watson writes:
Doug is exactly right about the scene. I have a collection of Adair County post cards, including several "Greetings from..." that includes this one. I have six of this particular scene, one with Columbia, two from Tenessee, two from Missouri, and one from Virginia. It was an easy way to hawk cheap postcards, which usually sold at the turn of the last century for one cent each...and cost one cent to mail.

Physician Deliveries: Good Columbia memories

By David Wells

My son, Greg Wells, was born in the office of Dr. M. C. Loy on July 11, l956. The building is now gone but it was beside the Columbia Baptist Church and is now a parking lot. Greg was born about 4 P.M. and I was allowed to take him and his mother home about 10:00 PM. I asked Dr. Loy what was the charge for the prior service and delivery and he said $75.00. I asked about the 6 week followup fee and he said it was included.

These are good Columbia memories. --David Wells

JIM: 100 years ago, February 7, 1912

Banking was in the news, a century ago as it is this week. The news then was a bank cum dry goods store, and some new officers at the Bank of Columbia. (Nothing to compare to the news this year of the New Floor in Robert's Bank, this week, about which CM received in a tip from David Wells at a recent hospital board meeting, and which our veteran reporter has seen with his own eyes, and stepped across to the teller's cage in sock feet rather than desecrate it with neoprene. If we don't get busloads of Canadian tourists coming to Columbia to see the New Floor in Robert's Bank, 114 Public Square, nothing will do it. We give up. They can just stay at the Mall of America for all we care.) But JIM Gem has so much more than mere doings of the banks. It was a time of great health care enterprises, a time when Doctors lived upstairs by or over their practices - as is surely scriptural in one of the Books of Hezekiah - and when in a single building one could get a prescription filled, buy spectacles, and make arrangements with a local undertaker - without ever moving the horse. This is a short, but classic JIM. Please click on the headline and read it all, to be just as enlightenment by JIM as we have been. -EW

By JIM

Around the Square, February 7, 1912

This edition of the News noted that the space recently vacated by Citizens Bank would be converted for use as a dry goods store. Counters and shelving had been installed, and Mr. Henry Ingram, who was then conducting business in the wholesale building "off the square" expected to remove his stock there by week's end. The News allowed as to how it made a very attractive store room and that it would be a much more convenient location for Mr. Ingram. (The Citizens Bank opened in 1906 in the Page Building and closed its doors at the end of business, Friday, September 22nd, 1911.)

Julia Pickett Thompson: Great memories of two great doctors

By Julia Pickett Thompson

I lived across the street from Dr. Nell's office.

In the neighborhood with Dr. Salato living next door and Dr. Nell was across the street. Since Dr. Salato's office was downtown and I needed a doctor for a scratched knee or elbow I would run to Dr. Nell's office. He would see me immediately and clean the wound and bandage me up.

Mother had no idea I was taking in the services across the street until one day I came home with my leg bandaged. He would always welcome me with a smile and of course, a treat before I left.

Good memories of someone who cared and took time out of his busy day to show some kindness to a neighborhood child.

Deborah Hensley: My home birth with Dr. Nell attending

'Dr. Nell was a jewel. He always had time to listen and you truly felt like he knew you and every family member.' -Deborah Hensley.
Most of her sibs were born at home or at the doctor's office: The writer at Dr. Nell's, Shelia Ann at Dr. Salato's office, when it was upstairs in what is now the Dan Antle/H.Hunter Durham/Jim Zornes Buildings on the Square in Downtown Columbia. Only one brother, William Albert Burton, was delivered in a fancy hospital setting - but he turned out right well, too. -EW

By Deborah Hensley

I was one of eight children born to Delmer Lee and Arleter Burton. Dr. Nell came to Little Cake Road to assist my mother in having me, using natural childbirth. The next youngest sibing born after me was Shelia Ann Burton. She was born in Dr. Salato's office in the upstairs of Hunter Durham's current office location.

Dr. Nell always addressed young BJ Fudge as: Cowboy

Even when he wasn't in, he was in. Adair Countians learned the every M.O. - where his haunts were, the predictability of his habits, and even to risk a faked gruffness when his game was interrupted at the poolroom. Billy Joe Fudge remembers little details of Dr. Nell's clinic as only a natural poet can do.

By Billy Joe Fudge

I remember what a character he was. As a youth I didn't know if Dr. Nell even knew my name for he always called me "Cowboy."
