Dr. Nell always addressed young BJ Fudge as: Cowboy

Even when he wasn't in, he was in. Adair Countians learned the every M.O. - where his haunts were, the predictability of his habits, and even to risk a faked gruffness when his game was interrupted at the poolroom. Billy Joe Fudge remembers little details of Dr. Nell's clinic as only a natural poet can do.

By Billy Joe Fudge

I remember what a character he was. As a youth I didn't know if Dr. Nell even knew my name for he always called me "Cowboy."

I remember being really sick a lot of times and Dad driving by his office and after not seeing him there we would head downtown to the poolroom where we would often locate him. He would always then show up at the office sometime later.

After I got my driver's license I was taking two allergy shots each week and I would go up to his office at night most times. I had to wait for 20 minutes before leaving in case of a reaction to the shot. Often times I would be the only person there and he would clean the office, empty garbage cans, etc. and we would have some interesting conversations.

I can still gag just thinking about tongue depressors and saying ahhhh. I believe he sometimes enjoyed making me gag. I can still smell that office and taste the bitter alcohol on the thermometer, and feel the cold stethoscope on my chest and back and that needle sticking in my arm. I remember the little refrigerator with the medicine bottles in it and all the nurses although I was as bad with names in my youth as now.
