Deborah Hensley: My home birth with Dr. Nell attending

'Dr. Nell was a jewel. He always had time to listen and you truly felt like he knew you and every family member.' -Deborah Hensley.
Most of her sibs were born at home or at the doctor's office: The writer at Dr. Nell's, Shelia Ann at Dr. Salato's office, when it was upstairs in what is now the Dan Antle/H.Hunter Durham/Jim Zornes Buildings on the Square in Downtown Columbia. Only one brother, William Albert Burton, was delivered in a fancy hospital setting - but he turned out right well, too. -EW

By Deborah Hensley

I was one of eight children born to Delmer Lee and Arleter Burton. Dr. Nell came to Little Cake Road to assist my mother in having me, using natural childbirth. The next youngest sibing born after me was Shelia Ann Burton. She was born in Dr. Salato's office in the upstairs of Hunter Durham's current office location.

The rarest of the children. William Albert Burton was the only child born in a hospital here - at the old Adair Memorial Hospital.

The other five siblings - Captola, Randall, Jackie, Frankie and Danny - all were born at home.

I remember going to Dr.Nell's office after hours. The long hanging of suckers were for those brave souls who got a shot for their ails and didn't cry: They got a wonderful candy sucker. I don't recall earning many suckers... just shots.

Dr. Nell was a jewel. He always had time to listen and you truly felt like he knew you and every family members.

- Deborah Hensley
