Diversity Thoughts on Martin Luther King Day, 2012

'As I write this homework assignment on this Martin Luther King national holiday in this country led by the first ever African American male, I'm thankful for enlightened parents who believed that all men are created equal, never mind the skin color,' Linda Marcum Waggener recalls, remembering her childhood in North Metcalfe County, KY and of the deep pain felt learning later of the painful experiences forgiving neighbors on the other side of the segregation line endured.

By Linda Waggener

It has been a quiet, peaceful Martin Luther King national holiday in these parts. I'm thankful for that. I came of age learning about the desegregation movement and am reminded of it today.

I grew up in rural south central Kentucky in the culture of a 160 acre farm where my mom, dad and his parents ruled and life was built around daily chores managing crops, livestock and food.

Some are behind the times on Evelyn West

Joyce M. Coomer writes:
Ed, some people are behind the times. I've known about Evelyn West since 2004 (her death) when my son saw her obit and let me know about it. There's a couple of videos on-line if anyone is interested in watching Evelyn West in action. --Joyce M Coomer
Thanks, Joyce. That's useful information - particularly on the videos. Though watching them might upcite some people so much they'd have a heart attack. We do still need to know about Elroy. Hope you or someone will add to our knowledge of the community.-EW

JIM: Wholesome advice, 1906 style

Submitted by JIM

There is no reasonable excuse for anyone to live in a town if he doesn't like it.

If you have no word of commendation to say for your town, its institutions or people, emigrate.

You won't stop the town clock by going away. The church and school bells will have the same musical ring; the little dogs will play as well; and the pure air, bright sunshine and sparkling water will have the same health giving properties.

Speak a good word for your neighbors if you can; if you cannot, don't everlastingly enlarge on their faults.

If you have become thoroughly disgruntled, move away; go some where, where things will suit you.

How'll we honor Evelyn West w/o knowing where Elroy is at?

Comments re article 49418 Birthday of Amy Mae Coomer show biz Evelyn West Jan 30Roger Lacy writes:
Ed, I just read the Wikipedia link to the article on Evelyn West, a.k.a Amy Mae Coomer, and read she hails from Elroy in Adair County, Kentucky.

I tried doing an internet search on Elroy and didn't really find much about it. Can you enlighten me as to where Elroy is located and any other information you have about it?

Thanks so much! --Roger Lacy
Thanks, Roger Lacy for pointing out this serious void in Wikipedia, which hit me like telling a resident of a micropolitan city a little east of here that there is no salvation in Acronymology, no redemption in the Power of the Logo. It shook my faith in Wikipedia, momentarily, until I realized that, next to the Adair County Library, Mike Watson, and JIM, CM is as responsible and therefore as derelict as any individual or entity, in not perpetuating the legacy of this, one of the greatest Adair County communities. Worse: We sure wish we knew where Elroy is. How else will we properly honor Miss West? Heavens help us! Not so much as a historical marker, not so much as a sonnet or limerick, let alone a Country Song. -EW
