Carol Perkins: Las Vegas trade show

A real life sisterhood is realized in Las Vegas - better than the Tv show
The next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Guy trusts his GPS

By Carol Perkins

Guy's annual Las Vegas trade show was last week, which meant a trip for me, too. Las Vegas is a happy place to be. I have yet to see the bleak side of this town, but I am sure I could find it. The lights, the shows, the people, and the shops-anyone can have a good time without spending a penny in a slot machine or a few dollars at a blackjack table, or they could lose the house and family jewels.

A Kindred Spirit: The case of the squeaking drier

By Teresa Kindred

We generate a lot of dirty clothes at this house. Most of the time we do laundry for eight to ten people. Most of those people are guys who work outside and get really dirty. About four or five years ago we bought a Kenmore washer and drier from Sears. I should have bought them a long time ago. They've been great...until last week.

Several years back, at a mission study that took place at First United Methodist Church in Munfordville, a discussion question asked us to think about differences among urban, small town, and rural lifestyles. We shared a number of insights and images, recalling circumstances that simply don't occur in big cities.

"He listened to the old people's stories, of how the trickster rabbit smiled and smiled his way out of danger, and how the fox never saw the trap for the smile, and he reckoned he could do that. He could smile like honey on a johnny cake. Serenity was his shield."

Poetry by Robert Stone: A world anew. A sonnet

A world anew
- a sonnet responding to Elizabeth, a book by Edith Briggs
Not nakedness but difference perhaps
results from knowing good and evil ways.
Each trait that sets apart the other, traps
the unsure self who sees and names and preys.

Not inner strength but outer brawn upholds
destructive taunts entangling beaten down.
Each act that hurts with stinging words unfolds
the horror of compassionless false clown.

Not all at once but step by step the weak
may find that those who strike are victims too.
Each help that stops another damning clique
or brings more hope can build a world anew.

Mature as well as young are bullied
and struggling fall behind and pull ahead.

- Robert Stone, 20 November 2011

Chuck Hinman now in hospice care

By Robert Stone

Paul Hinman sent out this note about his father, Chuck, last Friday.
Hello everyone,

Dad is not doing very well today. Since he's had two hospital stays within the past three weeks, I have placed him in a nursing facility in Bartlesville. He has refused food and drinks little water as of today (day number two at the nursing home) so I have initiated hospice care for him at the advice of his primary care doctor and the nursing team at the nursing home, Heritage Villa.

Your continuing prayers are much appreciated. Dad is getting the best possible care right now and I just want him to be comfortable and his needs met.

My thanks to all of you and I will keep you updated as I know things.

Send Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's events now

A reminder: As a courtesy to rapidly growing audience, we only post Events which include Street and Numbers for listings in Events, or references to future Events in Stories. We recommend that writers who want better attendance always write and edit the CM Event notice First, before a story is written, with an aim of giving basic Who, What, Why Where, When, and How information in the most succinct form. -EW

Get extra exposure by sending your organization's holiday events for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's, now. The earlier CM gets your event, the more publicity you receive and the more likely attendance will be increased.

Boost Attendance: Include NAMES (and hometowns to multiply attention), of performers, organizers, bit players, ushers, and elan people in your announcements. Names, in almost all cases, increase interest even more than photo(s). And when names are sent, photos are welcome submission.

And, for non-profits, free admissions or donations only events, the package is elaborate, far-reaching, and Free when CM receives the submission Directly and first. As always, as a time, gas-saving and sometimes life saving courtesy to our readers, we only post Free Events listings when Street and Number are included for the Venue.

It's for organizations in Taylor, Russell, Metcalfe, Green, Cumberland, Casey and Adair Counties of South Central Kentucky. To send yours, use any Contact-Submit button. If you need help submitting the first few times, don't hesitate to call 270-250-2730 for assistance filling out the emailed submissions.
