Thanks to several people, cleanup has gotten off to a great start. Several truck loads have been hauled off with more to go. We've definitely made a dent in the cleanup, but lots is left to do.

The furnace is being fired up, water turned back on, pigeons shooed out and all the many, many old ledgers, law books, records and receipts, some dating back to the early 1800's bearing such names as Daniel Trabue, are being cleaned and cataloged. Historical treasures are being found from the clock tower to the trap door.

We have appreciated the many positive comments about the preservation effort and people looking forward to community use of the courthouse. We'll have the courthouse decorated in period style in time for 'An Old Fashioned Christmas,' part of Christmas in Columbia where we'll be wrapping gifts and be offering courthouse attire, water color prints, note cards and ornaments with all proceeds going to the courthouse preservation effort.

Although much has been done there is still much to go...window sills, baseboards, steps, bathrooms and even vaults. If you would like to help in the cleanup effort, just call the library at 270-384-2472.

The Courthouse Clock is Running Again

2011-11-18 - 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Larry Neat is being sincere wearing the shirt with the words "Let me drop everything and work on your problem." It was a huge, expected bonus for the Clean-Up Crew to have Neat show up Thursday, November 17, 2011, with the single goal of making the courthouse clock run again. According to a reliable report from Magistrate Perry Reeder at the Adair County Judge Executive's office, who checked the clock out the window of Suite 1, Adair Annex, the clock was right on time at 8:45amCT, Friday morning, November 18, 2011. The photo of the tower, at right, is over the home of the late Carl Hutchison, whose work as the Keeper of the Clock, whose work with the mechanical parts was heralded over a wide area of Kentucky. Hutchsion earned the princely sum of $50 per year as Keeper of the Clock. Neat wasn't even aware that such a fee had ever been paid when he volunteered. Work is continuing Friday, November 18, 2011. Volunteers are still needed.
