Poetry by Robert Stone: Haiku

Dear Reader,

Another two months have rolled by and here are the recent haiku. All of them were written as comments on comments or on status notes or on photographs or on blog posts or in responses to emails. If you are really curious as to what caused me to write one of these, send me a note at iam@bellsouth.net and I'll let you know. -ROBERT STONE

Missing In Action

Jon Halsey writes:
Seems like at least a perfunctory comment would have been included in today's edition remarking on the missing column's of two of Sunday's most widely read weekly contributors - Tom Chaney and Chuck Hinman. I understand Chuck is experiencing serious problems but previous columns from both writers have been substituted in the past or a note was injected explaining that their column was not available for publication that week. Jon HalseyKnifley --Jon
Thanks. And apologies. The columns are being posted a bit later. EW

Jim artickle raises question on High No. of post offices

The artickle on Sunday with CM, November 6, 2011, JIM: The Great School Day Rally, 1914 which tallied the number of Adair County School Districts at one time at 80, raises the issue in the heads of all those with nine year old minds addicted to nuggets of information: Just how many Post Offices did Adair County have at the peak? JIM is guessing that in the 1800's at the peak, there may have been as many as 75, Anybody know exactly? -CM

Mike Watson writes of 3rd Adair 'Medal of Honor' winner

Strictly speaking, Adair County native George Hector Burton didn't receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. But the Confederate Warrior named to the equivalent Southern military list, the Roll of Honor. Still, it is a noteworthy honor, especially as Veterans Day 2011 approaches, that two of the 57 Medal of Honor recipients from Kentucky are Adair County natives: Sgt. Dakota Meyer and Brig. Gen. James Alexander Williamson, and that this third native son, George Hector Burton, received an equivalent CSA military honor. George Hector Burton became a minister after the war, and returned from his post Civil War home in South Carolina to Adair County to preach, at Fairplay, on at least one occasion.

By Mike Watson

Burton, George Hector, born 10 July 1839 in Columbia, Adair County, Kentucky, a son of Joseph Burton and Mary Owen Burton, died 2 February 1922 in South Carolina, with burial in Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery, McCormick, SC. He was long a resident of Troy, SC.

Is there a way to block political calls, Maury asks

MELEWI writes:

Good question. I'd like to know, too, before just doing away with the phones altogether. Junk calls make a lot of people want to rethink ownership of any of the vexatious devices. -EW

JIM: The Great School Day Rally, 1914

The event was a combined Columbia Graded School and The Lindsey Wilson Training School, and brought to town teachers and students of nearly all of the 80 (yes, eighty) Adair County School Districts, and included a mass march from the Columbia Square to the Fairgrounds. Some great names of the past in this article: W.H. Wilson, R.R. Moss, Miss Laura Smythe, T.C. Coats, Marie rose, Cymbaline Moss, Flossie Dehoney, Shreve Davis, Edgar Royce, and more. Poetry by lee barko: The Mourning Doves

The Mourning Doves
an extended sonnet by lee barko
A solemn sadness did their song contain;
I envied them their love, this bonded pair.
Yet, I knew the secret that all loves share:
No love that lovers love can long remain.

A boy with rifle pierced their oneness through.
Gave them a oneness they had not before.
His deed performed, he went as boys will do,
Proud of the thing he did and would do more.

The one he left behind bewildered stood
And sang and sang to call to him his mate.
No answer came to him within the wood
For death is too proud to accommodate.

Long did his mournful cry come to my ears
Although I quickly turned and walked away.
And to his song I added my own tears
Recalling what I'd lost another day.

Love departed will never come again
For all the songs of birds or tears of men.
-lee barko

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Good Ship Lollipop and the Titanic

Another Angle, the occasional musings of a Kentucky Pastor: Good Ship Lollipop and the Titanic first printed 6 November 2005 in the Hart County Herald
The next earlier Another Angle: Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Of Spooks and Saints

By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh

The Good Ship Lollipop and the steamer Titanic don't usually appear together in popular thought, but recent history shows that the pairing was a super combination, perhaps unlikely, but still super. Toward the end of the summer I read about the death of California businessman Charles Black. Black, 86, had led a fascinating life. Receiving his bachelor's and master's degrees in business from Stanford University, he had also studied at Harvard. During World War II he had completed over 100 PT-boat missions, had done work as a scout behind Japanese lines in Indonesia, and he had received several decorations for valor, including the Silver Star.
