YPSILANTI, MI. - Wrestling in its first open event of the season, third ranked Lindsey Wilson College had four grapplers advance their way to a top-six finish to place at the Eastern Michigan University Open on Saturday, November 5, 2011, at Bowen Field House.

The yearly event featured more than 500 wrestlers representing schools all across the country, including members from all divisions of the NCAA and NAIA.

Sophomore Harrison Courtney led Lindsey Wilson with a second-place finish at 157 pounds in the Freshman/Sophomore division. The Versailles, KY., native went 4-0 in his bracket before falling in the first-place match to Lucas Smith from Central Michigan University 5-0.

During Courtney's winning streak he tallied a pin and two decisions as his other win came from an injury default. Courtney won his semifinal match by a 9-5 decision against Nick Carr from Kent State (Ohio) University.

Sophomore heavyweight Derek Nickel also competed in the Freshman/Sophomore Division where he finished third. Nickel was pinned in the quarterfinals by the University of Michigan's Justin Dozier, but then went on to win four straight matches to take third place.

Three of Nickel's four wins were by decision, while the third-place match was an injury default. Nickel topped Carlos Lugo from Ohio State University 5-4 in the fifth round of consolations to stay alive in the open.

Freshman Aaron Back placed fourth at 165 pounds in the Freshman/Sophomore Division, taking part in seven matches overall, which tied for the second most matches wrestled at the open.

Back finished 5-2 in his matches, taking both of his losses against NCAA Division I opponents from Kent State and Michigan.

The Pineville, Ky., native's wins were impressive however, finishing with a pin and two major decisions to go along with a decision and injury default. Back set himself up for the third-place match with a 6-3 decision against Andy Hoselton from Purdue (Ind.) University.

Senior Keith Klink was Lindsey Wilson's final placer, taking sixth at 133 pounds in the Open Division.

Klink opened up with a 12-7 decision against Eastern Michigan's Filiberto Colon, but was quickly sent to consolations after being pinned by Purdue's Matt Fields in his next match.

Klink went on to win his final match of the day against Tyler Kesselring from Central Michigan by a 7-1 decision.

While not placing, sophomore Josh Johnson also had a good run at 149 pounds in the Freshman/Sophomore Division, finishing 4-2 to fall just outside of a place in the top six of the bracket.

Included in Johnson's wins were an 11-2 major decision against Ohio State's Alex Gordon and 7-5 decision against the Buckeye's Joe Bruewer. -DAN WHITE
