When the old KY 88 Bridge over Green River collapsed

It was a long, rickety, one-lane affair, and it was a scary crossing. It collapsed 31 years ago, when Bobby Arnett was attempting a crossing pulling a bulldozer. It was an eerily slow collapse, and Arnett was, miraculously uninjured.

The Highway 88 Bridge spanning the Green River in Green County KY.This was a one -lane bridge and a very scary bridge to cross.

In 1980 Bobby Arnett was crossing the bridge when the dozer he was pulling caused the bridge to collapse. Arnett told me that the bridge slowly fell into the river and Arnett was not injured.

Also before the Green River Dam in Taylor county was built in the late 60's the water would rise over the bridge or at least up to the floor..."I'm tellin' ya...I hated to cross the bridge"... The bridge was replaced with a modern two-lane bridge.

Thinks Bobbie Sexton had the best idea: Holding Dakota in prayers

Trish Jackson writes:
Wow!! That is definitely the best idea I have seen posted as far as honoring Dakota Meyer!! I cannot imagine dealing with all the things that this young man is going through and then being bombarded with press. We are all so proud of Dakota that I hope we don't try to commercialize him too much. The very best thing we can do for him is to pray for him to be able to deal with all that he has gone through.

Mr. Sexton, I commend you for coming up with the best possible way to honor this hero...and God Bless You for your military service as well!! - TRISH JACKSON

JIM: How the Columbia faced the Wet/Dry issue 110 years ago

By JIM

The following appeared in the News fivescore and ten years ago this summer.

It is not right to advocate trafficking in whisky in any way, but if it is to be sold and drunk, what is the best way for the young men of the county and town of Columbia -- open saloons, or the way we have it now? It is said that within the last twelve months one man has delivered in Adair County, in jugs, over $4,000 worth of whisky, the most of it being expressed in this place. Add to this sum the amounts sold by other parties and you have at least $10,000. [$10,000 in 1901 is roughly the equivalent of $250,000 today.]

Take the present and the days of of open saloons and compare them, and you will find drunkenness now much greater than in the past. This paper is against liquor to be sold in any way, the only object in sending out this item is to let people see the way things are drifting.

An appropriately irreverent comment: The first thing that came to mind upon reading the foregoing was a quote attributed to any number of politicians. When asked how he stood on a particularly knotty issue, Mr. --------- replied, "Some of my friends be fer it, and some of my friends be agin it, and by-Gawd, I stand four-square with all my friends!" --

-JIM

New Idea. New KY 61: Dakota Meyer Road from Columbia to Greensburg, KY

Inspired by Fentress Co., Tennessee and Sgt. York, Rickie Williams suggests way to honor Dakota - one which would allow the Adair County Veterans Memorial Highway, the Bypass, to honor All Veterans, (including Dakota Meyer) of Adair County, a new KY 61 to tie Adair and Green Counties together in honoring Dakota Meyer -CM

By Rickie Williams

Sgt Alvin C. York of Pall Mall, TN received the Medal of Honor for his actions in France during World War I. He got more than a Bypass. He got a long section of highway, a school AND a movie! And that's just what I am aware of...there may be more.

Concerning Dakota, Green County and Adair County both lay their claims to the young man to the point he is probably feeling torn apart in a tug-of-war.

Agrees with others on honoring Dakota Meyer

Urges everyone to be at Blue Raider Stadium, October 2, 2011

Kathy Downey writes:
I totally agree with John Ford and Mike Mitchum the Columbia Bypass should be named in honor of Dakota Meyer. He is a hero in every way. How many of us could have or would have taken the chances he took with his life to try to save others? This county definitely needs to support this hometown hero in every way possible.

Also everyone please come out and support the Adair County celebration of his great accomplishments at Blue Raider Stadium on October 2, 2011. I think this is the least that we can do to show our appreciation for all that he has done for our country.May God richly bless you, Dakota, and may God bless America!!! --Kathy Downey

Keeping Dakota in prayers

I totally agree with keeping Dakota in our prayers. He has experienced more in his young life than many of us will ever imagine going through in all of ours. He is a true hero, he may not feel like it sometimes for not saving everyone, but if it had not been for him and the other gentleman, there would have been many more lives lost. I just pray for his comfort in knowing he did the best he could have for so many. God Bless!! - Jamie Isabelle
