Our great Columbia Walmart is selling made in America flags

Maury Lewis writes:
I am very pleased to tell the readers of Columbia Magazine that the flags which are being sold in our great Walmart are made in America. They are made in New Jersey.

Some with the wood poles are assembled in China but the banners are made in the USA.

I guess they can't find a company in America to put the two together. Maybe some one here in Columbia can get that contract.

If you are displaying the flag and you want to do it correctly, Google ways to hang or display the American flag, You will learn a lot. I did.

Happy 4th of July to all People who read this great American paper.

We are a blessed nation. - Maury Lewis

Proud of southern hillbilly drawl and expressions

Richard Raines writes:
I, for one am proud of my southern "hillbilly" drawl and expressions. I know that I have a college degree, but I like in "my own little way" to let friends and aquaintances know of my heritage, whether it be from my expressions, or my Eastern Adair Co., Russell Co (with some Wayne Co influences thrown in) dialect of southern English. I deliberately let that show on the greeting to voice mail on my cell phone. You can give a pig a bath, spray it down with perfume, and after all, it's still a pig!! --Richard Raines

Real threat to clear writing: Homophone-challenged people

Voice, too, calls for moderation in public beheadings; but 'Voice from a northern wilderness' is so het up he's unsure prejactly what he's going to do about situation. Does not comment on what The Californian has steered up

A voice from the northern wilderness writes:
As much as I might agree in principle with The Californian, public beheadings should be reserved for those in the newspaper business who are oblivious to the term "homophone." If I read one more time of a car wreck caused by break failure; of someone carrying a pale of water; of bells peeling (which always brings forth images best left unmentioned in a family-oriented magazine such as CM); or of someone having a six-ton wench for sale (see previous parenthetical), I don't know, as Miss Jane Sullivan was wont to say, just prejactly what I'll do, but it just might draw a bigger crowd than the J.O. Russell will case and the string racing finals of south Russell County rolled into one. --A voice from the northern wilderness

Myra Harrison Report: Adair Farmers Market, Fri., June 24, 2011

Myra Harrison is back today at the Farmers Market, and she sends this report on what's for sale at 6:22amCT, Friday, June 24, 2011:

It's Yellow Squash Day: We've got more sellers today. Crops are coming. The supply is good and the quality is great. Caitie has a wonderful new Squash bread, and she has samples. Yellow Squash is in great supply. Customers tell us they use it in so many ways: Fresh in salads. (Some even cut it with a pocket knife, sprinkle a little salt on it, and eat it raw - the way they would a turnip or apple). Put up as pickles. Simmered and buttered. Sauteed in a medley or by themselves. And a Sano specialty: Battered and deep fried. The nutty flavor is addictive. I've tasted Caitie's sample squash bread. It's great. I won't say it's my favorite - but it's one of my favorites. All of her bread is so special.
  • John and Joyce Wolodozki, McGaha, KY: Cucumbers, Tomatoes. Roma Beans. Yellow squash. Cabbage. Green Peppers. Green Tomatoes.
  • Darrell Bunnell, Coview Farms, Coburg, KY: A good assortment of Flower and Herb Plants. Fresh Cut Flowers. Broccoli. Small Heads of Cabbage. Green Onions. Potatoes. Fresh Pork including Sausage. Fresh Chicken.
  • Caitlyn Bunnell, Coview Farms, Coburg, KY; New! Yellow Squash Bread. It's really good and she has samples! And she has Lemon Bread, Zucchini Bread, White Bread and Wheat Bread - all fresh baked and delicious.
  • Myra Harrison, Yellow Hammer Farms, Greater Fairplay, KY:
  • Cabbage. Yellow Squash. and Fresh Basil.
  • Holly Sinclair, Sano, KY: Dark Red and Light Red and White Sweet Potato Plants. Pepper and Tomato Plants. Green Onions. Potatoes.
  • Margie Rooks, Sano, KY: Red potatoes. White Potatoes. Cucumbers. Yellow Squash. Beets. Cabbage. Onions
The Adair Farmers Market is now open: 6am-10amCT, today, June 23, 2011. Open each Tuesday and Friday at these times during the 2011 growing season, at the Adair County Extension Office Parking Lot, 409 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY.

(Ad) Another great opportunity in automotive

Sometimes classifieds are so clearly written that we're tempted to take a look before it goes public (though we never do that; just tempted). Here's an example:
2010 Chevy Malibu for sale: I have a 2010 Chevy Malibu for sale. Exterior is Silver with chrome accents. Interior is black and grey. Runs perfect, only 41,000 miles. The car has a KY rebuilt title. The car was hit lightly on the left side, but professionally repaired by a local body shop. The car is an Automatic, has ice cold Air conditioning, and all power options including: steering wheel controls, power door locks, power windows, power seats, and Paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The paint and body are in excellent condition. It has been serviced well and just had a recent oil change. If you have any other questions please call (270) 634-4752 or text stephens2628@lindsey.edu. -Danielle Bennett

Gratitude for Adair Co., for folks who care about one another

Steve and Cheryl Strodtman writes:
Our family is grateful that your on-line magazine exists. It is very comforting to find information that is presented in such a way that we do not have to worry about something blatantly embarrassing appearing on screen that makes us blush, or needing to be concerned about grandchildren nearby seeing what their eyes do not need to view. Thank you for all the stories and pictures of families, school events, churches worshiping, local meetings, children enjoying the wonder of the simple things of life, animals of all types sharing our community, plus the abundance of neighbors helping neighbors in all types of situations. We are not native to Kentucky, but we are grateful to share what you have so much of in Adair County - people who care about one another and who take pride in their community. - Steve and Cheryl Strodtman
Thank you for so succinctly and eloquently stating the goals of CM and for discerning the widely shared ideals of this community, and especially for stating them so well. If you think we are doing our part to live up to those lofty aspirations, that's wonderful news to us. Thank you so much. - Ed Waggener

California reader takes issue with someone: being ran over

A California/Kentucky reader in writes:
After reading two (CM-area county) newspaper accounts of someone "being ran over," I can't take it anymore!!!

One paper used the offending grammar in three different places: the HEADLINE, the caption on the photo and in the body of the story. Another paper has consistently written: "He was ran over...."

Since I'm not there to personally behead these two editors, maybe you can help me out. I'd surely appreciate it!

Thanks,

Former student of Miss Frances Russell

P.S. Even my husband -- an aerospace engineer, who always says "he has went," (which sends me into a rage) - caught this one.
You are mostly so right! Miss Willie and Mrs. Willis would be apoplectic. Something has got to be did.. After reading your letter I got so mad I taken and sent notification of the outrages to the CM prestigious panel of pretty good language experts, "Jim," BJ Fudge, and, of course, the esteemed Mr. Watson and await their input before doing anything which might incite or steer up some idjit who might take matters into their own hands. In the meantime, we do want to go on record as being adamantly opposed to your suggestion of multiple beheadings - and certainly not public ones, even for these mehainious crimes. That's not in our Quaker nature. We wonder if you would settle for maybe just a small, private decapitation of just one offender - just as an example to show we English majors mean businesss and won't be trifled with; that someone being ran over is a thing up with which we will not, we SHALL not, put! It does make my blood boil. I'm taking one of my nerve pills and the rest of the day off. I can't take it anymore (n)either. - EW
