Commends Bob Barnes for taking week off to help tornado victims

Diane Benningfield writes:
I think it is wonderful that Bob Barnes decided to dedicate his time and effort to go to Alabama and help the tornado victims. To take a week off from your regular job to go help others is not something most people would do. I commend him for this and wish him a safe and successful trip. God Bless him!!! - Diane Benningfield

History: When Glenville whupped up on the Townies, 9-1

There was no joy in Columbia the day Glensville aka Glensfork/Glens Fork/Hardscratch trounced gallant lads from Graded School 9-1. Townies left Hardscratch in silent defeat

By "Jim"

In today's "100 years ago column," mention was made of the Glenville nine whupping up on the Graded School baseball team by the lopsided score of 9-1. Perhaps sports enthusiasts will enjoy this post-mortem of the game, penned by the Glensfork community correspondent. It appeared in the May 10, 1911 News:
About thirty of the happiest, noisiest girls and boys we ever saw from the Columbia graded school, condescended, as some of them were heard to say, to "cross the line of civilization and come out here on April, the 29th to see their school win an easy victory over our boys from the sticks. But our rough untidy heathen from the hills were mean enough to make nine scores to the Graded School's one, in two endings (sic), whereupon the Columbians remembered just at this time they were needed at home and immediately bolted and would not even favor us with the yell of their institution as they had done incessantly from the time they left Columbia.

I hope they will come back and if they will agree to do so I will see to it that those old rough fellows out here that never attended high school and would not have sense enough to learn a college yell, don't get a score.

It's never depleted

100 Years Ago: Didn't need Peedy Phipps telling us There was Rain!

Adair County's annual calamitous downpours did a real number on the county in 1903, putting the Campbellsville pike bridge a mere 18 inches above water and keeping folks away from the mouth of Disappointment. Bridges were cheaper then, though, in those days, when the Champion Bridge Company bid its deluxe model over Green River at Neatsville for $3,700, a teeny fraction of what it takes for Jobe Darnell to put one across Sulphur Creek today. And in Gradyville, one of Strong Hill's houses and a blacksmith shop were washed away. This authoritative report is based on the authoritative compilations of Jim from the authoritative Adair County News of May 3,1903, and on the ultimate authority on things past in Adair County, the writings of historian Mike Watson in An Adair County, Kentucky History. And that's just a sampling of what's in this account. -CM

By "Jim"

Although the May 3, 1911 edition of the News was by self-confession quite short on news (several pages were dedicated to the Sheriff's report), a fair number of articles of interest graced the front page.
