History: When Glenville whupped up on the Townies, 9-1 There was no joy in Columbia the day Glensville aka Glensfork/Glens Fork/Hardscratch trounced gallant lads from Graded School 9-1. Townies left Hardscratch in silent defeat By "Jim" In today's "100 years ago column," mention was made of the Glenville nine whupping up on the Graded School baseball team by the lopsided score of 9-1. Perhaps sports enthusiasts will enjoy this post-mortem of the game, penned by the Glensfork community correspondent. It appeared in the May 10, 1911 News: About thirty of the happiest, noisiest girls and boys we ever saw from the Columbia graded school, condescended, as some of them were heard to say, to "cross the line of civilization and come out here on April, the 29th to see their school win an easy victory over our boys from the sticks. But our rough untidy heathen from the hills were mean enough to make nine scores to the Graded School's one, in two endings (sic), whereupon the Columbians remembered just at this time they were needed at home and immediately bolted and would not even favor us with the yell of their institution as they had done incessantly from the time they left Columbia.Retrieved from oblivion by "Jim."
