Great Wooded South Lexicon II: Gob, passel and more

Previous Lexicon: Great Wooded South: Lexicon I
Next Lexicon: Great Wooded South Lexicon III: Finally, warsh rag, wirehouse

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

Many "from off" locals are continuing to struggle with some words and phrases apparently only found in our very own Great Wooded South Lexicon. In an attempt to reach out to these folks and to our "from here" local younger generation who themselves are experiencing the same difficulties of interpretation, the Great Wooded South's Language Department has decided to occasionally list a few of the more troublesome words and or phrases.
  • Zink: a basin usually found in the kitchen or bathroom in which things can be washed

  • Gob: a great amount of anything.

  • Passel: a large gathering of people or a large amount of things

  • Whataya say: a statement of amazement or concerned disbelief

  • Can't say if I do: I don't remember or I don't want any
More local, language, lexicon enlightener's forthcoming as the need comes to our attention. -Billy Joe Fudge

Despite weather, Rotary lunch raises several hundred dollars

Click on headline for story plus photo(s)

Despite the downpour today, the Columbia Rotary Club had a good turnout at the annual Bean Lunch today at the Columbia United Methodist Church, 202 Burkesville ST, Columbia, KY. George Kolbenschlag said that he believed that, even with a slightly smaller crowd, profits would be about the same as last year.

The Rotary will split the proceeds - several hundred dollars - between local service projects and the Rotary's PolioPlus effort to eradicate that disease. The Columbia Woman's Club sold desserts, with the proceeds from their efforts going to the Green River Animal Shelter.

Birthday: They danced on Petty's Fork bridge all night

*Sur le pont, de Pettit's Fork, L'on y danse tous en rond
Linda Vincent Jessee, now a resident of Metcalfe County, was born in 1945 on what is now the Tommy and Marsha Grider Estate. Her father, the late Fred Vincent, who carried the mail between Columbia, KY and Celina, TN, always told about the Sunday she was born. There were Saturday night revelers on the bridge who danced throughout the night, maybe just a coincidence - but maybe in celebration of the birth of the little girl who would spend most of her childhood in the Christine area of Adair County.

*At d'Avignon, they actually danced under the bridge. At Petty's Fork, then Pettit's Fork on all the maps, they danced on the top of the floor of the bridge. But certainly, by all accounts, a good time was had by all.
