School Board Chairman congratulates Academic Team!

Fifth out of 161 teams is AWESOME; thanks goes to students, the coach, and to the parents and others who encourage the students year-round.
By Marsha Walker

I am so proud of our ACHS academic team again this year. I learned they received 5th place in the 2011 Kentucky Governor's Cup. I wondered, "Fifth out of how many teams?" I just found the results online at kaac.com and counted the number of school districts in the competition.

They competed against 160 other district teams (if I counted correctly). Fifth out of 161 teams is AWESOME!

All of our schools fared well this year. I give the credit for their success first to the students who work so hard, then to our dedicated coaches and to the support of parents and others who encourage the students year-round. Not only are our students excellent competitors, they also make us proud by the sportsmanship and good character they display at the events.Marsha Walker

Jim examines the births number conundrum

By Jim

Upon reading your March 22nd "dearth of birthdays" lament, I decided to do a bit of research. In the 10-year span 1961-1970 (a decade picked at random), there were 2,850 births recorded in Adair County.

Were the births perfectly distributed, there would have been slightly over 24 in each March, for a total of 242 in the decade. The actual number was very close to that at 234, an average of seven and a half in each day of the month. However, the number for March 22nd was considerably above the average at 11 - six males, five females.

An answer to the birthday science question

We now have a benchmark number for the birthday list:If we divide the latest census count for Adair County, 18,656, by the number of possible days on which to be born, 365.25, the average number of people born on any given day would be 51. -Robert H. StoneYes. 51. Thanks so much. We may not reach it today, but one day soon, maybe. -EW

Birthday science question: Fewer people born March 22, or what?

We've been scouring the countryside for listings Birthdays to post today. There are not as many in today's list as would be expected.

We are adding today's birthdays as fast as we can after they come in. This is one just posted:
Joyce Ponder is having a birthday March 22, 2011
In January and February there were days when the list swelled to 30-35 names. Our science question is: Are there really fewer people born on March 22? Or are people just too busy living their exciting lives to take time to send them in?

Whatever the answer to this question is, we're asking for help. Please send March 22, 2011 birthdays. We want to honor everyone we should today. Anniversaries are welcome too, to add to the very important one in today's Celebrations. To send a birthday, use any Contact/Submit button.
