Adair A-Team returns with best state finish ever for program Click on headline for story plus photo(s) Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story Received March 22, 2011 The ACHS Academic Team returned home from the Governor's Cup State Championships on Monday, March 14, with a grand total of eight awards in all, a new record for the school, while the ACMS team left with a huge victory in Future Problem Solving. Quick Recall earns Top 5 in State spot The high school Quick Recall team further solidified its standing as one of the top teams in the State as it earned another Top 5 finish in the event. This marks the third year in a row that the team has reached the trophy rounds in the Quick Recall tournament at State. The team began on Sunday afternoon by fending off a late-match comeback attempt against West Carter. In the second round, Adair County then defeated Louisville Eastern to advance to Monday's rounds of competition. On Monday morning, the team put up a dominant showing in the morning's opening round by defeating Corbin High School by over 20 points. The team's run ended for a second year in a row against perennial Top 4-ranked team DuPont Manual from Louisville in what was a close match. With this three year run of Top 5 finishes, Adair County joins DuPont Manual, Johnson Central, and Paul Laurence Dunbar as the only four schools to have accomplished this statewide. This year's Quick Recall starters were Luke Maupin, Ryan Montgomery, Jake Leibeck, and Eddie Franklin, Jr. FPS for High School and ACMS finish in Top 5 The Future Problem Solving teams of both the high school and the middle school furthered the team's notoriety by successfully finishing in the Top 5 in their respective divisions. The High School team finished in 4th Place, thus securing one of the slots available to Kentucky teams to compete at the International Championships in June. The Middle School team battled to 3rd Place in the Middle School division, and the team will also advance to International competition in June, thus marking the first time that both the high school and middle school will compete in the prestigious team event portion of Internationals in the same year. ACHS debuted at Internationals five years ago when the high school team won its first FPS State Championship. Adair County also has the distinction of being the only Kentucky school district to have finished in the Top 5 worldwide in the prestigious team and/or individual event for the past four consecutive years. Competing members for the high school team were Emmalee Baker, Roslin Wilson, Alison Feese, and Kyle Castaneda. Middle school competitors were Sarah McQuaide, Amber Turner, Rebecca Montgomery, and Tiara Holmes. This is an impressive third year in a row of Internationals qualification for ACMS Future Problem Solving. Luke Maupin nabs 1st Place overall in Social Studies Luke Maupin capped off an extraordinary high school Governor's Cup career by nabbing 1st Place overall in Social Studies. Maupin had finished in the Top 10 each of previous two years at State Finals, and this marked his first overall championship at the high school level. He followed that up with this third top 10 in a row at State Finals by finishing a career highest 4th Place in Arts and Humanities as well. Heather Jackson wins 2nd Place Statewide The team also claimed Top 5 awards in the FPS component event of Scenario Writing. Heather Jackson followed up last year's 5th place finish in world as a middle grade division entrant by earning 2nd place statewide in the event in just her first year as a high school division competitor. Jackson was joined in the top 5 by Luke Maupin who claimed 4th Place in the event as his first year as a competitor in this event. Ryan Montgomery finished his Governor's Cup competition career as a senior by claiming 5th Place in the event. This was Montgomery's second top 5 in the event at State. Abby Walker wins first place in FPS Alternates competition By advancing to State in FPS, all teams are eligible for FPS Alternates competition as well. In this component event, Abby Walker won 1st Place in the state with her team. Via random selection, each team's alternate member is pieced together with other state qualifying team's members to compete at the State level. Abby, as an experienced International competitor, piloted her team with a student from Lexington Catholic for a 2-person team, leaving them at a slight disadvantage, but the team overcame that and produced the highest scoring booklet of the competition. This is Adair's second Alternate Division championship in a row. ACHS 5th overall means 4th Top 10 finish in past 5 years With ACHS's finish of 5th overall in team points at Governor's Cup State Finals, this marks Adair County High School's 4th Top 10 finish in total points in the past 5 years, an accomplishment that only a select few have ever achieved at that level of Governor's Cup.
