Jim: Patent pending: some Adair County inventors and inventions

"Jim" has been doing what most people do this time of the year: Perusing patent files. and what he's found should change every Adair Countians pride and confidence forever. Ich Bin Ein Adair Countian will create a tighter choke, an icier spinal chill wherever it's uttered. Jim's research makes Menlo Park seem a two year old child's Leggo play room by comparison to the Great Laboratories of Adair County. The famous Invalid people conveyor, Sam Eubank's water pump, harness hangers, J.C. Eubank's tooth harrow, rated the best ever after a field test by the editor of the News; Jno. Eubank's snathe, which forever changed the the world of scything; the famed Amanda Go Pat automobile, great uncle Paul Waggener's unique and very convenient envelope, and perhaps as important as any, one none of us could ever forget George Hood's one man saw, which revolutionized the firewood industry for all times. All these and many more, inventoried below, are patented products of Adair County genius.

By "Jim"

(Researching in old newspapers can lead a body down some mighty strange side trails. Such is the case with the following, where one tantalizing morsel led to another. And another. And another. And.........)

Adair Countians have never been known for a lack of industry or ingenuity. Never was this more evident than in the first two decades of the 20th century, or, more precisely, from the years 1903 through 1922, when several Adair Countians applied for and were granted patents for an astonishing array of inventions.

Remembers trek on Greyhound all the way to Campbellsville

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Sometime around 1959 my paternal grandma, Emma Fudge, and I loaded on the bus in Columbia and rode all the way to Campbellsville. We went over to visit my Aunt Eula Jessie, her husband Uncle Tite (Titus), and my two cousins Keeteth Howard and Kimble Parker. Aren't double names a pure joy?

I remember every inch of the old road up to crossing the steel bridge and somehow I must have blacked out from there to the railroad tracks. The railroad tracks brought me to my senses, because I knew we had to get off the bus at the first street on the left across the tracks.

I remember jumping off that bus and getting our luggage and ourselves across Hwy 55 as the bus pulled away. The 300 yard walk up the street to their house seemed like a mile. I can remember it like it was yesterday. My, my, how time flies when you're having fun. -Billy Joe Fudge

Farris-Shepherd nuptials postponed 4 hours, for Greyhound

But wait for white orchid from Louisville was worth it for Lavelle and Morris

Morris Shepherd writes:
Lavelle Farris and I planned to be married, January 1, 1954, at 1:00 P.M. at the Columbia Baptist Church, but had to postpone the time until 5:00 P.M.Lavelle asked for a white orchid for her wedding dress. There were none in Columbia so the flower shop ordered one from Louisville. The only problem was, the bus couldn't deliver it until it's regular run which arrived in Columbia at 4:00 P. M.

Better late than never! The marriage has lasted 57+ great years. -Morris

Met a lot of nice people on Greyhound bus rides to Columbia

Nun once rode past Springfield with her just so she could see Columbia

Pattie McClister writes:
I used to ride the Greyhound bus every month, over a period for two years to visit my grandparents, Hazel and Gladys Blades.

I was 14 or 15 and kind of scared. After my first trip, I met some nuns from St. Catharines in Springfield they would always save me a seat on the bus.

One time one of them rode all the way with me. She said it was just so she could see Columbia.

I really met a lot of nice people on that bus. At that time we got off at the hotel on the square. -Pattie McClister

Mr. Morgan sounded Greyhound horn for biscuits go in oven

Maxine Walker writes:
My earliest memories of the Greyhound bus began while I attended L.W.C. The bus station was across the street from the municipal building. I remember how pretty Allene Willis always looked when she walked down Lindsey Hill in her high heels to work at the station.

The Greyhound bus delivered our flowers for Walker Florist from wholesalers in Louisville. If we ordered in the morning they could be picked up at 4pm at the station. I have heard that Henry Morgan would blow his horn as he passed his house and his wife would put the biscuits in the oven to be ready when he got home. -Maxine Walker

Hunter Durham remembers riding Greyhound, alone, at 9

Bus drivers looked after him along the way, on trips to Starks Building in Louisville to visit dentist

Hunter Durham writes:
I rode the bus from Columbia to Louisville and back with Mr. Henry Morgan and I believe the other bus driver was named Stewart. I would go at the age of 9 by myself to the dentist in Louisville where he worked on my braces at the Starks Building, catch a show on 4th Street and then get back on the bus at the bus station located at 5th and Broadway. We got involved with a bunch of bees which came into the bus north of Bardstown, a bus wreck just north of Lebanon, and I often stood by the driver as we traveled. The drivers took good care of me. The bus station then was at the Old Hotel on the Square. -Hunter

John Walker remembers father driving Greyhound route

Columbia Run, through Campbellsville, Lebanon, Springfield, Bardstown, and Fern Creek, ended in 1986, he remembers

John Walker writes:
I do remember when Greyhound had a route from Columbia to Louisville. My dad, Clifton Walker, drove a Greyhound bus from 1981 to 1987. He called the route from Columbia to Louisville the "Columbia Run". He drove that route part time, when the full-time driver, Joe Banks, I believe from Columbia, was either off work or driving another route. The route started in Columbia, then to Greensburg, Campbellsville, Lebanon, Springfield, Bardstown, Fern Creek, then finally to the bus station in Louisville. The Columbia Run ended I believe in 1986 because not enough people were using the route. -John Walker

Remembers his time on the Greyhound as bus ride from Hell

'I was never more happy than to finally see the top of the Columbia courthouse as the bus made its way down 55 from Campbellsville towards the bus terminal on the Square!' -Robert Cumming

I remember 1970 like yesterday when I was 16 spending an exciting summer working in Dallas, Texas, at a Jack-in-The-Box fast food franchise to earn some extra money.

I stayed at my sisters and the restaurant was convenient, within easy walking distance.

The Greyhound: A trip to 4th ST was like a trip to NYC

Brad Conover writes:
I recall my mother and dad speaking of the bus that ran between GLensfork and Columbia. The bus was operated by Mr. Otis Lewis. I can barely remember Mr. Lewis, but I remember that he repaired the little bell on my fire engine pedal car one day at my uncle's store (Samuel Aaron & Co.). It is strange how little things like that remain in your memory from childhood.

It was also quite an experience as a young child to ride with my parents on the greyhound bus to Louisville. You could depart early in the morning and return that night. For a little boy from GLensfork, Fourth street in Louisville seemed like New York City. My how the world has changed. -Brad Conover
