We received a reminder of Russell Co., KY Medal of Honor

Speaking of those who earned the Medal of Honor, did you ever hear of this fellow who was awarded same in World War II?

SPURRIER, JUNIOR J.
Rank and organization: Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company G, 134th Infantry, 35th Infantry Division. Place and dare: Achain, France, 13 November 1944. Entered service at: Riggs, Ky. Birth: Russell County, Ky. G.O. No.: 18, 15 March 1945. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy at Achain, France, on 13 November 1944. At 2 p.m., Company G attacked the village of Achain from the east. S/Sgt. Spurrier armed with a BAR passed around the village and advanced alone. Attacking from the west, he immediately killed 3 Germans. From this time until dark, S/Sgt. Spurrier, using at different times his BAR and Ml rifle, American and German rocket launchers, a German automatic pistol, and handgrenades, continued his solitary attack against the enemy regardless of all types of small-arms and automatic-weapons fire. As a result of his heroic actions he killed an officer and 24 enlisted men and captured 2 officers and 2 enlisted men. His valor has shed fresh honor on the U.S. Armed Forces.

Birds of Kentucky: F. House Finches + American Goldfinches

2011-02-06 - Snake Creek RD, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Peggy Spoon.
Good combo; birds love it! "Great combinations Adair County blend bird food from Day and Day feed and Fred's handmade birdfeeder. Fred is also selling these, but for those who ask for info on making the feeder, it is made out of Recycled tire, screen and chain, cut into sunflower shape and painted," writes Peggy Spoon. Among the brighter American Goldfinches are a number of streaky breasted female House Finches. Seen in the ColumbiaMagazine group on Flickr.

BG James A Williamson: Son of Adair, Medal of Honor recipient

Introduction from "Jim," who has heard of this Adair County, KY, hero and says he is the real thing. He checked Mike Watson's writing."If Mike Watson says it's so, it's by-golly full Gospel truth so far as I'm concerned. I checked his History, Vol I, and low and behold, what did I find but a brief biographical sketch of one James Alexander Williamson, born Adair County, Ky., 1829, etc. The only discrepancy of any note I found between Mike's account and the sent was that according to Mike, the family left Adair County in 1832 and went to Indiana, "and later' moved on to Iowa. I think one can with some measure of safely assume the family removed from Indiana to Iowa c. 1844 when Gen.-to-be Williamson was 15 or thereabouts. (Iowa was a bit of a safe haven for those wishing to "escape" the war clouds that were rumbling as early as the 1840s. A number of Adair/Russell County families, including some of the Blairs and Perrymans, removed there in the 1850s.) -JIM

By Hal W. Roach

I don't know about any of you, but I never heard about Brigadier General James A. Williamson when I was in school in Adair County.(This is from his Wikipedia page.):"Williamson was born in Columbia, Kentucky[1] in 1829. When he was fifteen years old his family moved to Iowa where he worked as a farmer, before studying law and being admitted to the bar. In the years prior to the Civil War he served as the chairman of the Iowa State Democratic Committee.

Guest Commentary: Westlake Regional Hospital

'At this point who's right and who's wrong does not matter. What does matter is what is done from this point on. We need a good hospital here in Adair County," It's Just for a Smile editor writes. He calls for maintaining friendships with all, a new openness with the public from the Board and Management, including full public disclosure of finances, including all salaries at the hospital. He wants an end to the trash talk and gossip

By Ralph R. Waggener
Editor and Publisher, It's Just for a Smile News

I have been taking rehab at Westlake Regional Hospital for the past few weeks for a stent I had put in back in November. During rehab time I have had a lot of talks with the nurses there. The nurses are some of the best if have had. They all care a lot about our hospital and just as the the ones who left do, they worry about their job security. That's understandable.

Carol Perkins: I'm walking the floor over you

Carol Perkins examines the rituals of courtship for the important in love years from 14 to 21, and the rules and rituals accompanying the mating games of that period of life
The next earlier Carol Perkins column is Things that are bound to happen

By Carol Perkins
"I'm walking the floor over you
I can't sleep a wink that is true.
I'm hoping and I'm praying as my heart breaks right in two
walking the floor over you."
Ernest Tubb wrote these lyrics in 1941, and I would bet that he never stood on a stage without strumming his oversized guitar and singing this hit. "Waltz Across Texas" was another masterpiece (1965). He was the driving force behind honky tonk music, and honky tonk bars sprang up in little towns, as well as cities, where couples danced the western swing to hits like his.

100 years ago: Thus spake Rev. Hadley

He 'wrote like he talked and his blunt way of expressing himself made his letters enjoyable'

By "Jim"

When Rev. Thomas Hadley, the long-time and quite outspoken correspondent for greater Rowe's X-Roads, crossed the River Jordan in the late spring of 1915, the News noted that

He was a minister in the United Brethren Church, was a gallant Union soldier in the war between the States, was a kind hearted man, one who will not only be missed by the surviving members of his family, but by all his neighbors and friends.

Carter G. Woodson, Black History Month, and Some Sports History

Celebrating February as Black History Month is an outgrowth of an observance instituted in 1926, 80 years ago, by Professor Carter G. Woodson. Woodson (1875-1950) was a historian; his parents were former slaves living in rural Virginia when they started their family. They had moved to West Virginia because the segregated schools there offered more educational opportunities for non-whites than Virginia, where there was little attempt to provide much public education beyond grade school.

Tom Chaney: Tales from Kentucky One-RoomSchool Teachers

Of Writers and Their Books. No. 283. 6 February 2011. "Me growed from a pumpkin seed", a review of Lynwood Montell's Tales from Kentucky One-Room School Teachers
The next previous Of Writers and Their Books: Jim Lowe's suggested reading list

By Tom Chaney
Email: Tom Chaney bookstore@scrtc.com

Professor Lynwood Montell has added another interesting volume to his rather lengthy shelf.

The latest book is Tales from Kentucky One-Room School Teachers, The University Press of Kentucky, 2011. And it is just what it promises to be. It is not a reasoned analysis of the history of elementary education in the Commonwealth; not a study of fairness and achievement in the drafty schools of yore. It is an attempt to preserve the stories of the diminishing cadre of the teachers who taught in those schools now gone for half a century and more.

Poetry by Robert H. Stone: Ignabit, a sonnet

Ignabit
- a sonnet for forbearance
While ignorance is bother to the vain,
the wise will recognize the lack of chance
to understand from faux pas to refrain,
and speak a gentle urge to better dance.

While rough abandon scars the tidy heap,
the measure masters glance around alarmed
to see destruction imminent in leap
and urge restraint to keep the now unharmed.

While lacking self-control sets fear to work,
the self-assured will overlook uncouth
to grasp the possibilities that lurk
and demonstrate accepted social truth.

What will be treasure in a future age
today may be a promise shut in cage.

- Robert Stone, 5 February 2011

Great Wooded South's National Skunk Month

Sight and smell of skunks is obvious during February mating season

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

For those who have not received the notice February is National Skunk Month in the Great Wooded South. Increased skunk activity is now becoming obvious by both smell and sight on our highways.

Skunks are nocturnal but have very poor eyesight and are more active at twilight, dawn, and on moonlit nights. Animals such as skunks with this kind of eyesight are considered to be, crepuscular.

Crepuscular animals are very likely to end up as "road kill" but this likelihood is greatly increased because of their Mardi Grasian, dancing in the street activity, during the skunk mating month of February. -Billy Joe Fudge
