Guest Commentary: Westlake Regional Hospital

He calls for maintaining friendships with all, a new openness with the public from the Board and Management, including full public disclosure of finances, including all salaries at the hospital. He wants an end to the trash talk and gossip

I have been taking rehab at Westlake Regional Hospital for the past few weeks for a stent I had put in back in November. During rehab time I have had a lot of talks with the nurses there. The nurses are some of the best if have had. They all care a lot about our hospital and just as the the ones who left do, they worry about their job security. That's understandable.



One of the nurses I talked to said she viewed the changes of management and the people who left when management changed as like trimming a rose bush. You trim the dead branches and you trim the still growing branches as well. What you have then is the basis for new life to come back in the spring.

No, she did not want her name mentioned she has a lot of friends who left and she has a lot of friends who still work with her and she knows like all involved life must go on.

This shakeup at the hospital was coming because all small hospitals are getting a raw deal from the big management hospitals who are buying up all the surgeons and doctors to work solely for their hospitals. cutting out any small county owned or private hospitals.

University of Louisville is teaming with Jewish and others and Norton's is teaming with other large hospital as well. This sounds good at first, but it is taking away small town revenue needed to run our community hospitals.

This change can be a good thing or it could be a bad thing. Will we have law suits? Or will this be a way to make all three hospitals - Westlake Regional, Casey County, and Jane Todd Crawford - stronger.

With a lot of work to make Westlake better, a stronger hospital will emerge. The change has a chance to be a good move. The hospital needs to let the taxpayers know about the salaries that all employees get, both for the employee's sake and the taxpayers benefit. Doing so could stop the trash talk that is going on Topix for one thing, and the gossip which has spread through this county like wildfire. Gossip hurts all the employees of Westlake, both the ones who remained and and the ones who left. It's gotten crazy. One morning I overheard one person say that Westlake had fired 20 more employees, just fired them! It wasn't so, of course.

We need to move on and we need to support the Good employees at Westlake as well as the ones who chose to quit, as well. Most all are friends with each other as well as Adair's population, and almost to a person make valuable contributions to life in our community.

At this point who's right and who's wrong does not matter. What does matter is what is done from this point on. We need a good hospital here in Adair County and I see no reason why this can't happen. Please I beg of the hospital board to be more open from this point on with the money spent; let everyone know the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly about our hospital.

I just can't help from thinking that if the taxpayers know what's going on, it has to help.

At least it would help to stop the the uninformed getting on the gossip train Topix and blabbing about people and hurting everyone on both sides - that would be a giant leap in the right direction. Ralph R. Waggener
