By the light of the full moon
My life felt like a cartoon
Waiting for Wiley Coyote to run into my sights
Looked both ways but wasn't on Neptune
Funny how things look so different on such a night

Gov. orders flags to half-staff
for Adair Co., KY, native Walter Baker

Memorial services in Glasgow, KY, tomorrow, May 29, 2010 for Columbian who grew up on Hudson Street, was class valedictorian here, and who showed so much promise in his youth in Columbia - and fulfilled it so admirably.
Obituary: Walter A. Baker, distinguished Adair Co., KY native

by Kerri Richardson

FRANKFORT, KY - Gov. Steve Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff until sunset on Saturday, May 29 in memory of former state lawmaker and Kentucky Supreme Court Justice Walter Baker who died from his battle with cancer on May 24, 2010, in his home in Glasgow, KY.

"Walter was not only an enthusiastic and hardworking public servant, he was a friend," said Gov. Beshear. "During his several decades of service, he earned the respect and admiration of both Democrat and Republican lawmakers, who routinely sought his counsel and advice. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family."

Baker acted as a public servant in Kentucky for over 40 years. He was first elected to the Kentucky House in 1967 and served two terms there before moving to the Senate in 1972. After leaving in 1981 to work at the U.S. Department of Defense, Baker returned to win back his old Senate seat in 1988. He served there until 1996, when Gov. Paul Patton appointed him to a vacancy on the Kentucky Supreme Court. Baker also has served on the Prichard Committee and was a member of the Council on Postsecondary Education.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 11amCT, at First Christian Church, 1100 Race ST, Glasgow, KY. The governor has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff until sunset on that day.

Gov. Beshear encourages individuals, businesses, organizations and government agencies to join in this tribute by lowering flags to half-staff.

Commentary on symbolism of Holladay Place Water Tower

See raising of tank emblazoned with Raider Bob as a portent of greater things to come. Remembers three other significant landmarks which created optimistism similar to that of today

By Billy Joe Fudge

We Adair County residents have much to be thankful for and based upon many goings on here we have a bright and shinning future just over the horizon.

During difficult economic times it is sometimes very tempting to withdraw into the lack of the present day which can cultivate stagnation rather than investment. This somewhat self-imposed stagnation can often lead to being poorly prepared for the future.

Similarly, during times of prosperity and plenty we are often tempted to rest on our laurels and retire into periods of consumption rather than investment. This condition following a completely different format is also a self-imposed stagnation that can often lead to being poorly prepared for the future.

Looking back I can find at least three examples where forward thinking leadership, where not allowing ourselves to sink into the mire of lack, and where we would not be lured into complacency have had a positive impact upon the present local economy and upon our way of life.
  • Governor Louie B. Nunn's investment in the development of rural back roads and the Cumberland Parkway has been an undeniable foundation for much of the prosperity we see here today.

  • Judge Executive Richard Lee Walker's dogged determination to make sure that every household in Adair County no matter how remote would have clean drinking water available at their residence.

  • Lindsey Wilson College's resurrecting itself from the ashes of mediocrity into an institution that is bringing the world to our community and taking our community to the world in a spirit of excellence, integrity, and achievement.
These three investments from the past have intersected in the present with the raising of the Holladay Place Water Tower.

We, all of us, have a responsibility to the future to not be lured into stagnation for any reason.

Our children, grandchildren, and all demand that we plant the seeds necessary to provide an opportunity for them to have a bountiful harvest, also.

Green Countian writes of meeting Adair CJE at OKCC

Hi:

My name is Fay Wright; my husband and I live in Green County, but we frequently come to Columbia and eat at Betty's OK Country Cooking restaurant, as we did last (Wednesday) night.

Mrs. Ann Melton was up there also. I had seen her photos on the Columbia magazine I don't know how many times; as I get on the website almost daily.

But that Lady is even more beautiful in person than her photos.

God blessed her with good looks; and I am sure a lot of good down to earth common sense; along with loyalty to all of the Adair county community whom I am quite sure are well pleased with the job and all of her efforts to make Adair County the proud and friendly community that it is.

My hat is off to Judge Ann Melton.

May she always have a happy, healthy, and very blessed life.

My sincere best wishes.

s/Fay Wright
