Cane Valley bank & other questions answered

Bona fide Valleyan says it wouldn't take much to open or re-open the Farmers Bank, and suggests CV do so and complete the dream of 1910 and build a cannery. Recalls days of A.F. ColumbiaMagazine.com seems to opened a can of worms with the 1910 news of the Cane Valley Bank.

"Jim" seemed to question the idea of what would it take to open or re-open the bank - which was and is, not much.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Sonnet, The things that after come

The things that come after

a sonnet by Robert Stone
Things happen but I know them not unless
they touch a special place in mind or flesh
and add another kindling piece to dress
the altar fires that finally refresh.

Whatever I can think or say or do
will narrow down the things that after come
and tint my own creation false or true
and paint myself a figure smart or dumb.

Ideas sometimes fill my restless brain
and most are lost to accidental noise
but now and then the stronger few remain
and of those few a fewer still are joys.

Refreshing fire must burn the base away
to make a space for future craft display.

Cane Valley Bank like a Phoenix

Wherein "Jim" answers one question about the bank, but not great puzzlements of when the bank will rise a third time or when, if ever, the great cities of Coburg and Cane Valley will merge - in the age of mergers? Or whether they'll just butt up against each other now that the big hard row is there? -CM

Cane Valley Bank like a Phoenix
Authority quotes chapter and verse
from no less an authority
than the gold standard "Taylor County Star"
By "Jim"

The reincarnated Bank of Cane Valley was in operation as late as the winter of 1937. The March 4, 1937 Taylor County Star reported the passing of Mrs. Joan Powell Sanders, age 84, on February 22nd.

Listed among her survivors was a son, Cortez, "cashier of the Farmers Bank of Cane Valley, whose home is in Columbia."

Kentucky hunting and fishing license is bargain

From KY Fish & Wildlife

FRANKFORT, KY - For less than a single round of golf, you can fish all year long. You can hunt squirrels, rabbits, raccoons and coyotes all season for less than the cost of a tank of gas. Fifty dollars buys you the opportunity to take two deer - hundreds of dollars worth of meat when compared to grocery store prices.

As the new license year approaches, Kentucky's hunting, trapping and fishing opportunities remain one of the state's best recreational values. Families are pinching pennies wherever they can find them, and licenses offer an incredible value not only for a year's worth of fun on the lake or in the woods, but for plenty of chances to bring home dinner at a bargain price.

Wonderful names in CM Birthdays today

There are wonderful names in today's birthday list. One sure to make those who wonder about such things do so is Jackson Lyric Dean. Jackson as a given name for a boy is seen more often these days, but "Lyric," remains unusual, at least for these parts.

There was a reason for the name, his proud father, Craig Dean, said. When Jackson Lyric Dean first arrived, he was well pleased with what he saw. "He was practically singing at birth," his proud father said then. Singing just came naturally to him, and so the wonderful, unique name.It pays to check the birthdays every day on CM. Even today, after you know what we just told you. There's a big list. Click here to see today's birthday list.. And remember, if we missed an important birthday for today, or for any day in February and March, we're adding them now.

Use any Contact/Submit button to submit a Birthday (with year of birth in parenthesis), In Memory Birthday (with birthdate: Month, day, year in parenthesis), or Anniversary (with year of wedding in parenthesis).

If you are sending an In Memory Birthday, please do so from the obituary in ColumbiaMagazine.com. That gives us the information we need to post a link which future family researchers may find helpful. -EW

Jim stands uncorrected facts
in case of Farmers Bank, Cane Valley, KY

The Farmers Bank of Cane Valley was closed in 1910; the mystery of the 1925 check is solved, however, as 'Jim' reports, the bank was reorganized and reopened under the leadership of Mr. T.T. Tupman in 1919. CM readers will now await the next answers, including when the Farmers Bank ceased to exist after 1925; and the other two questions on everybody's minds as Cane Vally re-emerges as an important post between Columbia and Campbellsville: 1) When will the bank re-open next?, and 2) When will Cane Valley merge with Coburg? (or will they just grow and bump up against each other as Jamestown and Russell Springs have done?
About: Old Check from Farmers Bank, Cane Valley, Adair Co., KY

I stand uncorrected in stating that the Farmers Bank of Cane Valley closed in the 1910, as noted in the "Hundred Years Ago" column of for February 16, 2010. That the Bank did indeed fold is evidenced by the following three articles, two from the News and one from the Berea (KY) Citizen newspaper"

T.J. Bishop hit a lay-up with just under seven minutes left to give CU a 51-49 lead. Bishop, who scored CU's first three points of the game, scored the rest of his game-leading 17 points in the second half.

SPRINGFIELD, KY - Campbellsville's women secured at least a tie for the regular season Mid-South Conference title on Saturday by defeating St. Catharine in Springfield, 88-75. But it wasn't a pretty win.

For seven innings Saturday, February 20, 2010, Campbellsville University pitcher Curtis Payne held Shorter College in check, but that all began to change in the eighth. The Hawks rocked the Tiger's bullpen for six hits and five runs in the final two innings to knock off No. 8 Campbellsville, 5-4.

The damage was done in the bottom of the ninth, as Shorter loaded the bases twice and scored four runs on a single from Austin Roberts and double by Matt Johnson.

Backing Into Spring

Along about February every year, I get anxious for spring.I will not say that I despair of its arrival. Evidence of some seven decades assures me that it will appear. It is that I get ready for it earlier every year.

I don't trust the signs completely, but I will not become a complete agnostic in those matters, ere I inadvertently rattle the slats on the beds of the gods of spring and they wreak vengeance most fearsomely -- perhaps by banishing me to Phoenix.

Hopelessly Trapped

In the late 1970's, the Lease Records division of the Land & Geological Department where I worked was relocated to the newly refurbished Pioneer Building. It had been the long-time home of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. It was an old building. The men's rest room at the back of the 2nd floor was so old that instead of marble doors and stalls, it had thick, oft-painted plywood stalls and doors.

Valentine's Day 2006 is now past. We have endured the jokes, the e-mails, the candy hearts, and the cards with corny and sentimental verse. Now, at long last, we can go on to other things, other poetry. One of my own very favorite poets is Emily Dickinson (1830-1886). I never have my one-volume book of her collected works very far away, and I find fresh insights in her words every time I read her poetry.
