8th grade students have March 5, 2010 deadline for Rogers Explorers program The 2010 summer dates for the Rogers Explorers program are June 6-8 Lindsey Wilson College, Columbia, KY; June 9-11, University of the Cumberlands, Williamsburg, KY; and July 21-23, Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, KY By Sharon Dodson, The Center for Rural Development The Center for Rural Development is giving more Southern and Eastern Kentucky eighth-grade students than ever before the chance to experience Rogers Explorers this summer and receive hands-on training in math and science while getting their first taste of life on a college campus. Applications will be accepted through March 5, 2010 from graduating middle school students within The Center's 42-county primary service area for the 2010 summer sessions of Rogers Explorers. As an Explorer, participants develop critical leadership skills, explore their interests in math and science, and prepare to become the region's next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs. The Center is partnering with the University of the Cumberlands, Lindsey Wilson College, and its newest supporter, Eastern Kentucky University, to host Rogers Explorers in three-day, two-night sessions at each campus. The 2010 summer dates for the Rogers Explorers program are June 6-8 Lindsey Wilson College, Columbia; June 9-11, University of the Cumberlands, Williamsburg; and July 21-23, Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond. "We had an opportunity this summer to further expand our program by adding an additional host site on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University, which provides even more openings for rising ninth-graders to participate in this amazing program," Jessica Melton, associate director of education and training for The Center, said. During the program, participants live in college dorms, work with professors in hands-on activities in math and science, participate in extracurricular activities, and complete a community service project. "This program is so important because it gets students thinking about their postsecondary education," Melton said. "They act as a college student for three days and two nights, which creates a comfort level for them in being on a college campus." Applications are available online at The Center's Web site at www.centertech.com. The application must be printed and necessary attachments mailed to: The Rogers Explorers Program, The Center for Rural Development, 2292 South U.S. 27, Suite 300, Somerset, KY 42501. Applicants may specify their preference of campus locations on the application form, but The Center cannot guarantee placement based on that first choice. All lodging, meals, and program expenses (with the exception of transportation to and from the host site) are provided free of charge to participants.
